I have had hospice for family and I also worked for a couple of them. It is a very supportive organization that helps the patient and the family in the last stages of life when there is no more aggressive treatment being done. They deal with the symptoms to make the patient comfortable. They can supply the equipment to care for a patient at home, the medications to make them comfortable, nurses to monitor the patient and teach the family to care for the patient, home health aides to help with personal care, social workers for resources and emotional support and chaplains for spiritual support. They continue to keep contact with the family up to a year after the patient's death to be a support as needed.

we had hospice come into our home to help care for my mother before she died. The hospice worker was incompetent, a little confused, and was always late. On the night my mom died, we had called hospice in prior, and she finally got there and sat around. Once mom was dead, she said we would have to wait for the ambulance workers to get there before we could do anything with my mom's body, which was sitting in the living room. We weren't even allowed to cover her up. Finally, she left, only to return minutes later b/c she needed someone to jump start her car. So my dad had to leave his wife of 25 years to go help fix this woman's car. It was very pathetic and awful!! But I am sure there are some hospices that are better than others!!

As a nursing student hospice is good because it focuses on the all the aspects of care that are normally harder to obtain in a hospital. Their main focus is to provide the best comfort and maintaining all the needs of the patient including psychologically and physically.e.t.c The patient has more of a one to one basis with the health care team, which is needed at such an advanced ill state. It would definatley be a place of choice as far as great care is concern. I hope this helped.

I volunteered for Hospice for a couple of years and could not think of ONE negative thing to say about their service and organization. I just couldnt deal with the emotional loss because I would get so attached to the patients and just couldnt keep it in perspective. Anyway, I think that Hospice has many services to offer from respite care to the family members to medications for the patients. It is all about dying w/dignity, free of pain and I think you would find more ppl impressed w/Hospice than displeased, even in such painful, difficult times in their lives. Here's to us never needing it all the same! lol

Try to read the nurse to see if she really likes what she does for a living. Make sure your loved one is treated with love, and respect. Respect of your loved when they leave this world.
There are some people ( if you want to call them people),That work in hospice can be so unprofessional , They treat deceased people like a piece of meat. Even after death.

My friends grandfather had hospice come in and they really made his final days of life bearable and thye made the family more comfortable as well. I would never secongd guess myself in calling them if I ever needed their assistance.

They are a wounderful group of people who have big hearts. It takes a very special person to become a hospices nurse.
They provide a wounderful service to help family cope during such a difficult time. That not only provide emotional support for the family but also provide a way to know that your not alone...

I think it's great. My Grandpa died in a hospice. He went peacefully, and the people who worked there made the whole horrible experience so much easier for my family.

they have their purpose and you just have to understand what it is. when you go to hospice, you admit that you are at 'end stage' and that you just want to go out as quickly as possible, while being made as comfortable as possible. you stop taking life preserving measures, medicines, etc. you GIVE UP. on the other hand, if this is NOT for you, then dont go there. fight till the bitter end because after all, only your God can say when it is your time to go
