What I mean is, the first time you see someone in the morning, do you just start in like you're in the middle of a conversation, or is it important to greet people properly? I'm talking about what Turks actually do, not just what they should do.

The difference between American and Turkish manners was really what I was getting at, so thanks to those who knew what I meant. What made me ask, is that I hate it when people bust in the office and immediately start talking about their problem. I just think it's best to at least do the "good morning" although I totally agree about the opposite gender, and "salamo alekum" (or however you want to say it and spell it) is what I'm used to saying to Arabs and Kurds, so that will come naturally. Thanks. :)

Hey, babe:)

It depends actually. If you are talking about people at home, it can vary from a simple "Gunaydin( good morning), is the tea ready yet?" to a hug and a kiss and a big "Gunaydiiiiiiiin Canim (dear)"

If that is a colleague at the office, we say Gunaydin, Nasilsiniz (how are you) or a give them a simple nod and a brief smile..

One different thing we do from westerners is that when we meet strangers i.e. on the corridor or a parking lot , we tend to ignore them in stead of saying Howdy :). The reason is not because of rudeness but the opposite; we don't want them to feel uncomfortable especially if this person is from the opposite sex.

Now.. it is way past your bed time. Finish your bottle and go to sleep.

Nighty Night :))

Hello my friend,

Well, there are some little differences between the turkish greetings and the westerners' greetings, and of course it also depends on how much you are close to the person.

Usually, we just say "Günaydin"...Redcandy and Ipek gave you very informative and reliable information. They both deserve 10 points...

In addition to their answers, I will say also that in some certain backgrounds, people systematically say " SelamenAleyküm" , which is just a respect word ( whatever may be our religious beliefs ), but this word is only used when you arrive somewhere, when you feel that these people are a liitle " serious" ( elderly men, in general ...).

If it is somone that you know you say good morning. We don't say goodmorning to people that we don't know. Unless of course when we are in an office or workplace and we require the services of those people. Then it is polite and normal to greet them.

When you go to somebody's house, they will greet you by kissing you on both sides of the cheek, they'll sit you down, and most likely serve you tea or water.

When you wake up in the morning, people greet each other by simply saying "gunaydin." (good morning)

When you go to bed, people say "iyi geceler, " for goodnight.

When you leave, people will kiss both cheeks (similar to the greeting) and send you on your way.
