My school is having its annual blood drive and I am finally able to donate. I have never had blood taken before so i don't know anything about it. I have heard that you shouldn't eat before they do it and all these things. What should I know to be more prepared for it?

You need to eat well at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of fluids before donating. That will greatly help you to feel well after donating.

OK, for the sequence of the process of donation"
>> You will register and answer a confidential series of questions concerning your medical history. So you need to recall any illness you have, any medications you are on or taken in the past, sexual activities, etc.
>>You will go through a quick a health examination- your pulse, blood pressure, temperature will be checked. A blood sample will be taken from you to check your hemoglobin level. (Females are allowed to donate blood even during menstrual period as long as they are feeling fine and qualified).

>>If you are eligible, then you will go through the blood collection process. You will be lying down or in a reclining position. A tourniquet will be applied on your arm and you you will feel a little pain from the needle prick. The donation process takes about 10-15 minutes.

>>After donating, you will be required to relax for few minutes while you are being served with some refreshment such as cookies and juice.

The whole process takes about 35-45 minutes then you can leave and go home.

Hi, actually it is advised that you have a light breakfast/meal before going for the blood donation. Normally, the doctor stationed at the blood drive will first ask whether you've eaten something. Having a light meal would increase the sugar level in your blood so you won't feel faint after donating your blood. Other than that, if you're not having your menses (for females), then you're all ready to donate!! =)

Oh ya, you might already know this, but just in case you don't... there'll be a few stations at the drive so doctors/nurses will assist you in checking whether you're eligible for the blood donation. So no worries!

Well done! What a great cause to help other people! If you've never had a needle before it will hurt a little. Try to concentrate on something else when they do it and don't look! I count holes in the ceiling or something like that!!! They usually ask if it is your first time and because it is they will explain it all to you. All the best!
