Our mini apricot poodle is constantly scratching. I've tried everything. The vet checked her - nothing wrong. I've tried natural shampoos... She does not have fleas and is regularly groomed. Any ideas why she does this? Thanks so much.

A lot of dogs go itchy at this time of year if you live in the U.S. When it comes time to turn our heaters on due to the cold weather, our housepets get itchy because the heat source dries them out a little so the skin sheds a little and becomes itchy.

One thing you can do is if you bathe her between grooms, be sure to dilute your pet shampoo by up to 16 parts of water to one part shampoo. Shake the mixture up and apply. It should have the consistency of colored water with lots of bubbles. This will get down to her skin easier and rinse out better, so she will be cleaner with out so much residue.

If you don't wash her at all, tell your groomer that she needs extra rinsing and ask if she can have a conditioner or remoisturizer treatment following her shampoo. You will need to ask what the rate is for that because the remoisturizer is pretty spendy so there is normally a little extra charge per pet.

Normally once one of my clients get one Remo treatment, they always ask for it in the future.

One question, do you keep your poodle in a long, full haircut? If so, you may want to change up her style every once in a while so that her fur gets trimmed down once in a while so she doesn't have to go through dematting, that can irritate the skin quite alot, so I don't even offer that service.

Then there could be the other possibilities, food allergies, dust allergies, carpet allergies, etc. But if the vet didn't notice anything I would go with a Remo treatment and see if that doesn't relieve a lot of the scratching.

ALSO: Most important! NEVER leave her dog clothes on indoors if she wears clothes and that goes for all fur types. Having constant warmth coating the skin is not healthy all the time. Even hairless breeds should be taken out of clothes once in a while to let the skin have a break.

Shampoos can cause allergic reactions in dogs.Maybe the shampoo you are using is the cause.Stop using it for few days and see.Secondly, there are mites, which are usually invisible to a naked eye.See whether the skin of the dog is pinkish in color or pinkish red. This is due to dermititis. The vet would have recognised it.Further milk, eggs also cause allergic reactions in dogs, consult the vet and ask him to prescribe Anti histamines. If this doesnt cure.Definitely, the cause is intestinal worms or helminth infestation. The vet would then prescribe deworming. But consult the vet or you risk loosing your dog because of quacks like us on the net.

parasites or allergys... allegies to what? food, carpet shampoo, the soap you use, the shampoo you use.... and the list goes on and on...
what can you do:
*feed a non allegy food with lamb and rice from a pet store... there are many good brands, ask the sales clerk for the top ones
*use a product like Revolution a once monthly topical preparation
incase she has microscopic parasites or lice
*use a tar shampoo and rinse (like human teraseptic) and rinse three times as good as you think is necessary
*eliminate treats that feed incase
*don't use fabric softners on her bed, don't use bleach on her bed, use a mild soap like Downy to wash her stuff
*add skin conditioner to her food to increase the Linolic Acid/Omegas... try Vetrol X available from a large animal store and just a few drops daily on her dry food will help.

Yeah, go to another vet. If a vet had trouble finding the problem, why do you think people on here will know?

My dog scratched a lot too, she doesn;t have anything wrong with her and she doesn't have fleas either. I think that just likek humans they just are itchy sometimes, I mean just because they itch themselves doesn;t mean they have fleas or are sick.

Either food or environmental allergies. Change the food to a low or no grain food. Its harder to determine environmental allergies as they can be from grasses, dust, candle scents, carpet cleaners, laundry soap.......
