No, you don't. Benefits - you can buy games, download demos, watch movie trailers. Most important - you can play your games online (if a game supports multiplayer). Also you'll download updates for your PS3.
There is going to be an interesting FREE online world (like Second Life) soon - in the beginning of the next year.

Its free to join but, if you want old ps1 games and arcade games you have to pay. Being a member allows you to play online, download content from the playstation store, and create a friends list.

nope its free! you can play online against your friends, you can chat/message with your friends, you can dowload game demos and moive trailers for free. theres also a section where you can buy d ownloadable games. pretty much the same thing as xbox live except the achievements
