There are many inconsistancies in the bible that I just don't understand. Killing first born to prove a point--is that a loving god?! The fact that god hardened Pharoh's heart was sabotage. God didn't give Pharoh a choice, he was going to do the whole 10 plagues anyway. That's sadistic.
Other parts of the bible I find quite amusing:
it's okay to stone disobedient children (Deuteronomy 21:18-21)--I totally agree;
1 Timothy 2:15 says only women who have children will be spared hell --because I chose not to have kids, I'm going to hell? F-you;
Men aren't allowed to trim their beards or shave their heads (Leviticus 21:5);
Exodus 21:7-10 says men can sell their daughters into slavery

This was the consequences of Pharaoh not listening to God. There are consequences when we don't obey the Lord. Just as you have consequences when do or don't so something in life or with your children it is the same. God gave him many chances.

Now you need to watch The Ten Commandments when it comes out this spring or better yet go get it, alot of Libraries carry it for free, your question will totally be answered, Pharoh did this, not God, Pharoh would not listen when Moses came with His brother Aaron, and related Gods message to "Let My People Go".
Pharohs' heart was hard, and stubborn, Pharoh thought His Gods were better, and He could still win, Pharoh is the one that said the first born of the Hebrews should be killed, when Moses found out He said that, Moses knew what was next, that curse came back on Pharoh, because Pharoh is the one that put it out, so then the first born of the egyptians were killed, It is the simple fact that Pharoh said it, God didn't do it, Pharoh did it and got his own people killed.
God warned with plagues, everything to get them to listen, wow God tells us over and over today, Are you listening, We have a God that cares about us so Much, that watches all the terrible things we do, and yet still sent His Only Son to the cross for us, Can you imagine, God still Loves us enough to send Jesus to save us, Jesus Has His Arms Stretched Out STill For Us, Will you listen, God takes us through things sometimes so we will listen, As God took Pharoh through things, we got to let go of being hard headed and stubborn, as we see with the Egyptians, it is not worth it.

And don't forget that during the negotiations between Moses and Pharoh - God kept hardening Pharoh's heart.

Although God hardened Pharaoh's heart- what happened in the end- Israel was saved. Jus think: If Israel were not saved by God, and Jesus (who came out of the family line of Israel) had not arrived, you and I would not be here today! PRAISE GOD FOR THE HARDENING OF PHARAOH'S HEART!

Funny how God messes with the world so much in the OT, but hasn't touched the world since then.

I find it funny that you only quoted a tiny bit of a whole book....
Not only was Pharoh warned, but he continued to enslave the chosen people of the Lord. The Lord could not continue watching his chosen people in captivity.

They'll come up with some way to justify some of the barbaric acts their god is credited with having done. As the first person to answer this question did....
Doesn't make him any less barbaric....
