Appeler is to call someone. "Je t'appelle" means I am calling you.
S'appeler is to call oneself, that is, to bear the name of, to be called. "Je m'appelle Yvonne" means "I am called Yvonne", "my name is Yvonne".

"Appeler" is a transitive verb
J'appelle le médecin = I call the doctor

"S'appeler" is a reflexive verb.
Je m'appelle Marie = My name is Marie -I'm called Marie - Literal: I call myself Marie.

S'appeler is what a person does to themselves.
