up until about a month ago she was eating ok, but then she developed a corneal ulcer (almost healed). The vet said just to get her to eat go ahead and let her eat people food. She seems very interested in cat food when she can get to it and also will beg for people food. She wont eat the dog food. She ate a little the other day when I put her food all over the floor. She eats dry food and Im afraid to try canned food if there is any that is safe. Any ideas?

she is the oldest of 3 dogs so it would be easier not to feed her separately but I will if it would help.

hmm, maybe i have missed the point but whats an ulcer of the eye got to do with eating dog food?!! Has her sense of smell gone too? She has you feeling sorry for her and is getting choosy, if you are not 100% happy with what you are feeding her then how about giving her a raw food diet or other natural diet such as natures menu or nature diet wet food.

There's nothing inherently wrong with letting your dog eat people food. You just need to make sure you're doing it in a dog friendly fashion. I personally prepare human food for my dog. (She gets a lot of chicken/rice purees which are easy for her to eat.) Don't give it anything like chocolate or onions which are bad for dogs though. In my opinion, you're better off preparing variants of your own food for your dog anyway since the quality is better. After all of those canned pet food scares, I will never feed my cat or dog that stuff again. Unless you buy the really high end dog food brand, it seems pretty likely that it's mainly pretty low quality meat/etc. that ends up in the canned food.
I would steer clear of the cat food since it doesn't generally meet doggy nutritional requirements though.
Good luck!

I have fed my dog canned Pedigree ever since we got him from the shelter 10 years ago. He loves it (I get him the chunky kind and he goes nuts for it). It amazes me, ...it actually smells good enough for me to eat when I open the can! No, I haven't tried it!
Maybe that's the answer. Maybe your dog is responding to the cat food because cat food is the canned variety. You COULD try pouring warm water over the dry dog food which (on some dry dog food) makes a kind of gravy that dogs tend to like. Only bad thing about canned dog food is that they (the dog) don't get the teeth cleaning action they get with dry dog food. For my dog, that just means he has to get more Milk Bones (which he loves) and have his teeth cleaned by the doc more often (which he obviously hates and is mad at me for a day afterwards).

Cat food is a favourite for some older dogs and perhaps that is because of the ingredient Taurine.
Best food you can give any animal is fresh food. Nature diet with additional fresh meat, raw veg, variety of herbs and other natural ingredients. Your dog is an elderly lady, so spoil her whilst you can. You may be fortunate to have her for a long time, or she may just suddenly decide to travel up North! If you get my drift.
Cat food is not bad for dogs and it doesn't make them blind.
Give her what she wants and let her enjoy her life for as long as possible.

try some of the senior wet foods for her it is easier on the stomach. mix a little people food with it and gradually pull back until she is use to the dog food.most dogs enjoy our food so much more because it tastes better i guess. the more fresh smell the dogs seem to like it better.i give my older husky wet lamb and rice canned but there are a lot of good brands out there on the shelves so read the ingredients for a lower fat and salt content so your dog has a better digestion. good luck

You can mix one teaspoon of canned food with about 1/4 cup of warm water, then stir it around in the food. It won't give her alot of the canned food, but will make the whole bowl of food smell more appealing. Won't hurt the other dogs either.

You can use people foods in a way that that will be healthy for them. But if doggie is hooked on people food, she may not want to go back to yucky old dog food.

Just feed her anything she wants to eat. Hotdogs, hamburger, chicken, boiled eggs with butter..........
At 14, she can eat anything she will eat. It doesn't matter what you feed her. She needs to be happy.
