Because people are cruel; and short sighted. Human beings, as a society try to control everything. If it cannot be classified or controlled then it gets a label so the individual can dismiss it without feeling bad. One day they will put a label on the wrong person or thing and then surprise! Big time embarrassment.

I agree with the first answer. It's very hard not to label others. I try very hard not to, but there are times that I find myself doing exactly that. I think it gets frustrating. I'm sure I get labeled a lot because of my husband's position and status. I feel like I'm just like anyone else. But I've been labeled in the past as a snob. Well, I'm not the only one with the ability to speak and can't be expected to go around to everyone until I reach all to make sure they know I'm here for them. Sometimes they need to make the effort, too. So, I know how you feel about being labeled.

We ALL do that, and, anyone who denies it is lieing to themselves. As someone already answered, it is human nature to do that. It is an instinctive survival trait, to judge the potential threat when encountering a stranger.
Our civilized nature tries, sometimes VERY hard, not to automatically find bad things to think about, but the homosapiens that managed to become the top of the food chain, still, locks the car doors and checks the windows and entries to our homes. We buy and install alarm systems, keep dogs, check for tamper proof containers, install anti virus software, look over our shoulders at ATMs and are MUCH more wary walking around, outside, in the dark. We do all of this for protection against STRANGERS, whom we "don't even know."
What we SHOULD do, is NOT take any overt actions, based solely on first impressions. It is the best we CAN do.
