Great question.
Sometimes I get very angry when guys stand out there in the median asking for cash. A lot of these guys look stronger than I am!!! If they can get themselves to the median each day, then they can get a job!
I used to give them money or a bottle of water and it made me feel good about myself, but then I'd see the same guy out there everyday. Where is their motivation to get a job if they are getting free money out there from me?
I know some of these folks have mental illness & addictions and really wouldn't be hired anywhere. I feel badly for them.
So now I have learned that I don't HAVE to give them anything if I don't want to.
One solution I've found to help them without giving them cash to buy cigarettes & beer with is to give them a bottle of water to drink.
I gotta believe that some of these folks bring in a small fortune if they are at a good median, but I would have a lot of shame about standing there asking for free money without providing a service.
He may choose to stand there and ask for money, but I can choose NOT to give him any.

Yes I do. First we are not the ones to judge other people for we shall be judge the same way. Give out of your heart and expect nothing in return. If you do God the father wont bless you in return. God wants us to be a blessing to our brothers and sisters. Anything little thing is a blessing to pan handlers. If they want it for dugs or boos thats between them and God the father.

Hey I live in Texas, and love it! I do give money to them but I do it because I have been homeless and I never ask anyone for money but I should have. There were times when I went more than a week without food and lived in an empty warehouse for almost a year before I recieved my disability.Do what makes you feel better. Now that I have a little income I give as much as possible to homeless shelters that help women and children.Good luck.

I'm more likely to give a cigarette or the sweatshirt off my back to a pan handler.

None of those people are homeless because they made good decisions with their money. Why should I then be obliged to give you some of mine? I know, I sound heartless, but that's how I feel.

No.

A good majority of them are perfectly capable of utilizing their resources to get themselves a job. Whether that job is at McDonald's, Burger King...I don't care! They can still get a damn job!!

When you give them money, all your doing is rewarding their behavior and encouraging them to stay on the streets and not try to get a job.
Giving money to a legit cause is one thing, but when you're giving it to people who have the ability to make their own money...that's foolish. They're playing you like you're an idiot.

You know what they think about you giving them money?....."Dance monkey....DANCE!"

Giving them money only makes the problem persist and does not solve anything.

I never give money away. I work too hard to get it. The majority of the beggers seem young enough to work. If they can hold a sign asking for money then they can hold a sign that points to a Grand Opening of a new store and get paid for it.

if they can get to where they are panhandling, they can get to a supermarket and be a boxboy or take groceries to a customer's car for wages and tips. I have my own financial issues and nobody is throwing any money in my direction except what I earned or am entitled to because of my work.
