Some people are saying that "the key to fighting crime is putting criminals behind bars." What should be done about the overcrowding of prisons, then?

You really cant put every criminal in prison. The problem is everybody wants justice for every crime esp if they feel they have been mistreated. Violent criminals yes but at the same time there are 300 million Americans here so how do you lock up a percentage of those who commit crime? Its a hard question but at the same time most people will agree its not possible. Americans are going to have to realize that a certain amount of crime will occur and that the only way to solve overcrowding is not to send people to prison for dumb or stupid reasons

I worked in Prisons for over 16 years, very seldom did we change anybody. The only prerelease program in the country that is working is called the inner change initiave. It is a faith based Program that is going on in about 3 states right now and only about 10 percent of the inmates return to prison compared to 60 percent on any other program but the most amazing thing about is that the aclu is trying to stop it. Can you believe that!!

i think if they really looked into the persons background and tried to deal with where the root of the trouble came from. We all know that most crimes stem from some sort of drug/alcohol addiction. We should treat the core problem then maybe that would stop the crime they commit to get the drug. Of course, the government wants to shut down drug programs and open up more prisons. Go figure!!!!!

Personally I think the accommodations are too nice.I believe their stay should be made miserable(as in food and bedding and of course PINK jumpsuits for the men)I also love the idea of chain gangs! Why not put them(the chain gang) to work doing something that would save us tax payers some money? With treatment like this,I believe they would choose to "fly right"and avoid going back
Then
it would not be such a "revolving door"because there wouldn't be so many re offenders serving time which would cut down on the population

Personally, I dont think anything should be done about overgrowded prisons, these people didnt get to prison by invitation and if prisons are less comfortable tehn work, more people would stay out of them and lead constructive lifes instead.
