A lot of people believe that if someone takes an eye off you, you take that eye back from him! Metaphor for if someone does something bad towards you, you have the right to take revenge in the appropriate degree. Gandhi meant that if we as humans go by this 'an eye for an eye' rule, the whole world will be blind. Meaning humanity will go around in an evil circle, looking for revenge and hurting others. It is a message of peace.

Dear Kathleen,
I respect your opinion, but I do not agree with it. This quote by Mahatma Gandhi is about non-violence. By saying, "An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.", he meant that Violence against violence does not justify your motives and reasons. Forgiving is greater than revenge. If a Donkey kicks you, it does not mean that you have to kick him back. Take 9/11 as an example. After the 9/11 attacks, there were many cases for racism and harassment against Muslims. Even though most of them were US citizens, they were called terrorists, traitors, and many more names. But was that right? NO!!!
But at the same time this quote can get criticized for its meaning. For example, If someone hurts our family, we can't just let them do it. We have to stop them and take some actions against them, and sometimes those actions can get violent.
Thank you.

Gandhi had his own reasons for saying what he did.
Biblically, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth means that if someone attacks you or your family, you have the right to do to them what they did to you. For instance, if a person poked your Brother in the eye, you would find the attacker and put out one of the attacker's eyes, but you would not have the right to stone the person to death or kill him in any way. "Vengence is mine, sayeth the Lord".
Good luck and may God bless you.
Gandhi was probably taking the quote from the Bible quite literally, but he was wrong. An eye for an eye would only make the world half-blind!!!

In an eye for an eye mentality, a wrong is a wrong, it does not matter if the wrong was intentional or not and it is punishable by having the same thing wrong commit ed against the offender. Since we are all hurt by others at times, sometimes on purpose and sometimes on accident, we would all be able seek vengeance on them for wrongs committed against us; however, others would also be able to seek revenge upon us for the intentional or unintentional wrongs we have committed against them. So if you accidentally dropped something on your friends toe, they would be able to drop something on your toe and you both would be in pain. If your friend would forgive instead, knowing it was an accident, your toe would remain intact so you would be in much better condition to do her house work for her while she had her foot elevated. So the eye for an eye mentality will just leave us all hurt, the forgive your neighbor policy would mean we have a productive way to make up for our wrongs.

An eye for an eye means getting revenge in an equal level, link getting his eye if he blinded you
what ghandi is trying to say is that revenge is not the answer. imagine if a guy kills someone close to you. You'd have to kill him too if you go by that rule.
But thanks to a religious society today and human rights, that guy has to live for he has both government and Godly right to do so.
therefore you spare his life but make him suffer anyway in jail.
Ghandi spoke this in a humane sense.

Gandhi is saying that this way of thinking will only serve to damage everyone. 'An eye for an eye' means that if you gouge someone's eye out, they get to gouge your's out in return. (I think it was a law in England centuries ago). Gandhi means that if everyone followed this expression, the whole world would end up blind. :-)

i poke out ur eye u poke out mine pretty soon no one has eyes left because both the victims and agressors are are all blind
I think he said an eye for n eye and a tooth for a tooth make us all toothless and blind basicaly meaning that violence is dumb and solves nothing. Its great thinking but very hard to follow when ur under assault. Martin Luther King used Ghandi as a role model

It means that retaliation will solve nothing, if I am to be allowed to take your eye for you taking mine then it would only be fair if you could then take my other eye because I took yours, and then it would only be fair if I took your other eye as you took mine.
you see it never ends

This was followed in the days before Jesus. It was for one doing wrong to one and do back to him the same.
Jesus changed this when He came to earth. Now we are to love one another and obey the laws of the country and His.
If someone does wrong to you, let the law take care of it unless it is something small, turn the other cheek.........xx
