So I take my little brother into a local tattoo shop to get his first for his 18th birthday (I myself own over 20 lmao). And this artist guy is totally "dissing" every idea my bro has, he makes all the questions he ask sound stupid, like were wasting his time or we should be honored to be in his prescence. If i wanted to be ignorant I could of just punched him and called it a day "BUT" I was more interested with the behavior he was displaying. Honestly do alot of tattoo artist or tattooed individuals look down on newbies? I thought maybe he was irrated thinking maybe my brother was trying to be trendy by getting a tattooo? let me know what you think ? not mad lol just looking for opinions

Everyones input was very helpful , I ended taking him elsewhere. Honestly the artist was full of himself and not that great of a tattooist. He got a custom gargoyle tree with skulls and roses in some of the branches (I drew it lol) on his back, looks amazing . This artist was very talented and proffesional, he definately was worth the $1100 and of course he got a big tip

A tattoo artist is still a person..Anyone can have a bad day.
It's your talent and reputation going out the door on someones skin. You want them to have the best you can do. If they sound unsure, or are confused, it is sometimes hard not to express your opinion. You should try to remain professional at all times, but there is occasionally the one person who comes in and just rubs you the wrong way. You may not even know why yourself. Sometimes you just lose it, and act like an ***. In any case when this does happen to you, move on and find an artist you can relate to. The tattoo will turn out better for you and the artist.

In my personal opinion..that guy isn't a good tattoo artist at all. Any good tattooist is willing to help the customer not put them down. I haven't come across any like that so far. I think if ur gonna get ur brother a tattoo you should definately take him somewhere else. if the guy was rude like that before he started, what if ur brother shows some pain and he decides halfway through that he doesn't wanna deal with that

My artist says that he does this tactic to see if the "newbie" is really ready for a tattoo. Most of the artists that I know like for the person to know what they want and where they want it. They don't want to be responsible for someone getting something that sucks or that they will hate in the future. I don't know if this helps, but I had witnessed the artists at this shop do the same thing to people.

Personally I think the good tattoo artists (or those pretending to be good) usually act like this.
All though Rude is Rude no matter what. Maybe he just wanted to make sure your brother wasn't just jumping into it to quickly and did a poor job of it. If this is the case I would have to give him snaps for being more concerned about the customer instead of his wallet.
Did your brother get his tattoo?

i guess it depends. my artist is a close personal friend of mine and he HATES when people want generic crap tattoos. (regardless of if the person has no tattoos or is covered in crappy tattoos) basically he feels like he is talented enough that he doesn't have to do crap tattoos, and he doesn't. he stays busy enough with word of mouth and repeat customers that he can turn down whomever he wants to and it doesn't change his business.
he is a custom tattoo artist and i have seen him tell people that he won't do whatever tattoo they are wanting, they can go to whatever shop down the street and get that done.

i do think there are certain caliber artists who are so talented that it would be a waste of their time and creativity to do some dumb tribal or kanji and i definitely respect that and they should be able to turn down work that they don't want to do. however they shouldn't be rude about it, but no matter what they say there's no real way to say "i'm way too talented to wast my time on doing the crappy tattoo that you want" without sounding like a big arrogant jerk.

Well, my lighting fixtures bolt tattoo is there to ring a bell in me that power can't be created or destroyed. His mostly symbolises not anything. Not all tattoos desire a that means at the back of them.
