A coyote will eat most anything. Eats like a dog.

Just wanted to add if you get another cat and you live in an area where coyotes are present it is best to keep your cat indoors so you do not have to go through this again. Coyotes commonly eat house pets..cats and small dogs. The outdoors is just not a safe place for cats. There is a slight chance that your cat is still out there somewhere. You can try putting up flyers and calling your local humane society if he ends up being turned in there.

I know Coyotes are usually in pretty big groups by our house... we can hear them in the fields yipping. We have not had issues with them eating the cats around our place.... We have a fairly large feral cat colony and they are always present and accounted for. NOW kittens on the other hand disappear left and right. I would be more concerned with a neighbors dog, a hunting party or even one of my own dogs.
Coyotes do hunt but actually prefer to scavenge... I would check around...someone may have picked your cat up, may have been hit by a car... or may have just wandered away.. Good luck..we hope you find your missing baby

How coyotes eat you mean? I have seen many species of canines eat their prey and they all do the same thing with smaller critters.... they grab them by the head or back and shake like crazy... essentially breaking the neck and spine. After this if the prey is still alive they will bite the necks to stop the animal's breathing.
I hate to say it, but people are at fault here. Humans really need to be more careful with their cats for the cats sake and for the sake of wildlife. Pet felines should never be allowed to roam freely outdoors. I grew up with cats and we only let them out with us and they were always plenty happy with their outdoor adventures with us.
I live near the NH border and we have coyotes in our area too, but people still let their cats wander. Even if there aren't coyotes in your area, cats can be hit by cars, poisoned, stolen, get diseases, and even get killed by dogs. And wild birds and mice that domestic cats can kill are suffering and effecting the wild predator food supply, again causing hungry foxes and coyotes to be even more interested in going after loose cats.
Hopefully, you find your kitty and this time please don't let him back outside by himself. He'll be much safer inside with you.

Could be the cat has been killed. Could be it was scared off by a coyote and ran far enough away it couldn't find its way back and has been adopted by another family.
Since you will probably never know, it's best to think of the cat with another family than trying to imagine the details of being eaten by a coyote.

I live in the country and coyotes are a fact of life. I have three dogs and three cats and while they are outside all day, I always bring them in at night for that reason. Especially during the winter , they come in closer , and work in packs and domestic cats and dogs are easy pray. One neighbor hood down the road from me lost seven dogs in one winter. ALL of them during "last call" before the owners went to bed. Some of the dogs were kept in kennels outside and they jumped over and still killed them. Several lost their house cats as well because they put them out at night. How stupid is that? My cats know the routine and settle in for the night in their warm cozy spots in the house along with my dogs and I sleep well cause they are all safe.
My suggestion to you is, get it out of your mind. It wont do you any good to imagine how or if it happened. IF it did, it happened fast , they are lethal killers. It's the ugly part of nature and the food chain but that's the way it is.
Please go to a shelter and adopt TWO more to be buddies and keep them in the house.

It is just the circle of life. They got two of our cats in the last 6 years. One was taken by an Owl. It is truly the circle of life. The coyotes are fast and the cat is gone fast. The cat gets mice, rats, snakes, gophers........ and there is something that gets the cat.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I have a cat, and because we livein an apartment building, he has to be indoor. I live in Maine (we're practically neighbors!) and there are coyotes here, too. They will prey on small domestic animals.

Its probably not good to think of such things in light of your missing cat. Coyotes eat like every other carnivore you will see on Animal Planet. Your cat might have survived. Its not really a good idea to let your cat outside if you fear for its safety.

Where I live Coyotes will tear apart the animal that they killed and they will leave parts of it around. I hope you will find your cat soon.
