Temperatures have increased during the past 50 years.
There are three global temperature datasets in common use by climatologists. All three show that during the past 50 years (1957-2006), the global temperature has been rising at a rate of 1.2° C per century.
Here's the data from NASA / GISS:
http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/tabledata/GLB.Ts+dSST.txt
Here's the data from the UK Meteorological Office's Hadley Centre:
http://hadobs.metoffice.com/hadcrut3/
And here's the data from NOAA / NCDC:
ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/anomalies/annual.land_and_ocean.90S.90N.df_1901-2000mean.dat
Further, the rate is increasing. During the past 30 years, the temperature rise has been 1.7° C per century, and during the past 15 years the increase has been 2.8°C per century.

You may be referring to the study that was recently disclosed as faulty that has been in the news lately. Contrary to virtually all other information, the data in this particular study showed a decline in average global temperature in the last-I think it was about-30 years.
It was discovered that this study did not take into account improved technology and equipment over the period of time covered; superior insulation, etc. in the later equipment made it less susceptible to warming from the sun, which skewed the results warmer than the actual temperature(s) at the time of the earlier readings.
The reason the disclosure of this flaw in the data was so significant was that the study had apparently been cited quite a bit as evidence/proof that global warming was not occurring.
According to most reports, there are actually almost no reputable scientists or scientific bodies at this time who dispute that global warming is occurring-and the global cooling/coming ice age reports of the 70s were driven by the media, not supported as widely by the scientific community as some would have you believe.
At this time the serious debate is not over whether warming is occurring, but how much and how fast things will change and if mankind has or can have a significant effect on warming by decreasing our emission of greenhouse gases.

Average ocean temps have changed up and down a few tenth's of a degree, but it depends on where and how the measurements are taken and who pays for the "science".
Its these kinds of questions that Al Gore doesn't want you to investigate too much. That's why the data he presents for his theory of global warming doesn't included accurate thermometer measurements prior to the 1980's.
As far as anyone can tell, using accurate thermometer measurements, the average daily temperature hasn't changed much at all over the industrial period.
The "Medevial Warming Period" occurred well before heavy industry was in place, and it was estimated to be at least 6 or 7 degrees warmer - enough for crops to be grown in some parts of Greenland.
I happen to live in the shadow of Mt. St. Helens in Washington State. The funniest part about this is having more access to local CO2 data, and seeing that the Mountain is one of the West Coast's biggest polluters of CO2 - even when it is resting. Dang, someone needs a way to sue Mother Nature for this...And when it erupts it can spew more pollutants into the air than all of the industrial nations combined. How do we control that?
If you're over 40, you will remember that exactly the same people involved in the current "Global Warming" hoax tried this before in the 1970's...Back then we were all going to freeze to death with "Global Cooling". How quickly humans forget.
It is very good of you to think about - and research - and make up your own mind - on these things for yourself, instead of falling for mass hysteria.
Keep asking the hard questions, follow the money trail, and this will lead you to the real facts....

Well of course the average temp. will rise and fall. It's completely natural! Think about the ice age and the dinosaurs, the temperature will rise and fall throughout time, there is nothing Al Gore can do about that. I've recently looked into studies and the average temperature of the Earth has heated up by ONE DEGREE in the past 100 years! There is no sense in worrying everyone over global warming because it's absolutely ridiculous.

I read that worldwide temperature has gone up 1 degree which ironically is causing major changes around the world. Especially in for the inhabitants/animals up north.

Finally and intelligent question!
Thanks!
You are correct. We will begin a period of Global Cooling very shortly and that is a far worse scenario then Global Warming.

The drop in temperatures is caused by global warming. What is wrong with you? Everything can be blamed on global warming. From floods to droughts, it's all caused by global warming. Bad storms to lack of storms. All the same. The scary thing is all the goofy people who believe this hoax.

Well buddy, you have read wrong. The Avg temperature has actually gone up. I advise you not to research on infamous websites. Research on NASA's websites, to get the truth.

I think it is not so. The 5-year average temperature for 2007 is about 0.6 deg.C higher than is was in 1957.
