The SB 800 is probably overkill for the D 50.

I'd go with the SB 600, but nothing smaller.

BTW, shoot in Program mode rather than Auto - ALWAYS! It's just as automatic ... but a lot more sophisticated, and it offers more options when you're using a Speedlight.

Try a Vivitar 285HV once. They're cheap, powerful, and the thyristor does a good job on most occasions. Shoot in manual mode and let the flash set the exposure. If you don't get the look you want, they are easy to resell.
Compare the prices between a used Vivitar and a dedicated TTL Nikon flash and decide if it's worth the gamble.

Buy a TTL compatible flash, preferably a Nikon.

Read & study the "Using Flash" section in the Owner's Manual for your camera. Once you do, you'll better understand why using the TTL (this means the camera meters the flash off the sensor. This is the most precise flash control you can ever get) compatible flash combination is so important.

Once you buy your flash you'll need to study its Manual also.

I'm just adding a vote to Jim's choice for the SB-600 or SB-800, which I own.

You want to take advantage of the fully-integrated light management system, so you want to stick with a Nikon brand for the best utilization and support of this feature.
