I know that it's a biblical principle (so if you have some verses that would be great) but the church doesn't run on our money alone so what is the point? I don't make very much money and I am tempted to not tithe sometimes because I don't feel like there is a point to it.

in the old days when the kingom of israel was a royal theocracy, 10% was to maintain the kind, 10% to maintain the religious institutions who were in charge of every other service that today is paid for by your income tax.
today... it's really up to you. if you want, give, if you dont, dont.

(do pay your income tax or you'll get into jail) i meat tithing.

The point of tithing. That's a good question... I think the answer can be found in two places 1. The bible 2. History

I'll go from just history... Immediatly after the death of christ christianity spread all over the roman world and into gothic territory (we shall just deal with roman christianity). In the major city's 1 in every twenty people where christians... that's 1:20. Every christian would tithe and through the tithe's (whether distributed by the church or privately) the ENTIRE poor of the city was fed. And the christians took in people who had no education and taught them a proffesion and put them on the way to being productive citizen's.

Example. The city near where I live has 5.5 thousand inhabitants. I calculated that if each person (who brought in an income, also each person brougth in an income of 40,000: some people bring in less but ALOT bring in ALOT more) tithed there would be 5.5 million to upkeep churches and to help the poor... Do you know how many houses for the homeless that could build? 27.5 house that cost 200,000 dollars. And homeless people don't need 200,000 dollar homes (it would be great if everyone could live in one but it would be way to big for them.)

I hope you get my point. If everyone tithes everyone wins.

P.S. Tithes are a WILLING sacrifice. Your supposed to give freely and trust to God to help you through without that 10%, all the time knowing that someone else needs it more than you...

I haven't always tithed but I have for a few years now. Some churches do abuse their financial authority, as some implied, but most have safeguards in place so that cannot happen. If you are in a church that is not responsible with their money, I would change churches. (Pastors are not suppose to know who tithes in their church. )There are a lot of views on tithing. I think if we all tithed, the church would be able to do that much more amazing things for God.You can also give to other charities as part of your tithe. Our church just finished building a Community Life Center for our small town to give people a place for a variety of community needs, from after school care to a food pantry to a cool-down station when the weather gets too hot and other programs too numerous to mention. If you can't tithe right now, because of finances, give more of your time. That's what I did. Each year I challenged myself to give a little more till I ended up tithing. For me, it's been about challenging myself to be obedient to God and to be more disciplined and trusting in God's provisions more. I have heard people say that when they did these things they found themselves to be blessed by God and I have to say, that has happened in my life too , in many, many ways.

It's not biblical to tithe 10% of your money.

If your church only had 50 members & each household only made $2000 a month. That would still be be 10,000 a month.

That's a lot of money for running the lights & paying the preacher for a few hours a week!

Well its supposed to be an offering to God. It has become money in today' society but I don't feel that it has to be. You can offer God anything from volunteering to setting side time in your day with Him, as long as its truly for God.

I don't make a lot of money either, so I do not tithe financially, but I try to give something back to God and the church whenever I can. God doesn't expect you to go into the poorhouse giving money to the church. Maybe instead if giving it to the church, donate some to a food bank or a women's shelter, etc.

Having served in this capacity I will tell you in a practical sense that tithing keeps the Church going, it supports the Pastors, the expenses, children's functions and keeps the religion perpetuating. Here, this may help you; Gen.28:22,Num.18:21,24, Josh. 14.3-4, Jubilees 32:15, Lev 27.30-33. OK? Hope this helps.

Tithing is an act of trust in your heavenly provider. It is one thing God says we can test Him on. If we trust Him enough to give our tithe, he will always outgive us. Malachi 3:8-12 is the passage that everyone uses. It tells us that when we do not tithe we are robbing God. But when we do tithe, He pours out blessings on us . It doesn't so much have to do with giving to the church but to God himself. Hope this helps.

It depends how you see your church leader.

Do you see him/her as a person called of God who is guided, directed and/or inspired of God to use the tithing funds as God would to build his kingdom upon the earth? If so your tithing is building the kingdom of God and demonstrating your faith in him and his kingdom.

Or do you see your church leader as simply a good man or woman with good intentions trying to do what they feel is God would want? If this is the case then your tithing shows your faith in your church leader and in their judgment regarding how to best spend the money.

you give out of the overflow of your heart. you also give because it's not your money in the first place. you are merely a steward of God's money while you are here on earth.

when you get attached to the world and the ways of the world, you become concerned with what is yours and what is not yours. well, nothing is yours. you have a job because God has placed you there. you have a home, car, or whatever, through the grace of God. everything you have is meant to glorify His name and further His word in the world.

you must have forgotten that this earth is not our home...who cares about what is here? i have a coat, but if you are cold, you are welcome to it because i know that God will give me another one.

if your money means so much to you, then keep it. God doesn't want or need your money - He wants your heart... Source(s) mark 12: 41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins,[j]worth only a fraction of a penny.[k]
43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on."
