These are urges that can become very strong and professional help is recommended. If you do give into them the urges become a habit and it becomes a response to any type of feeling, anger, sadness, loneliness, stress, frustration and even happiness sometimes. It can be caused by a chemical imbalance or by other disorders or trauma's (conscious or unconscious). The thing is, and I did not believe it when I was warned 20 years ago, if you cut and leave scars there will be days in the future where this will come back to embarrass you. I work in health care now, and it is not to hard for my co-workers to figure out what caused the scars. Some are tactful, some are not, and a lot of patients are not. If I had it to over again I would have worked harder with my therapist and psychiatrist to sort it out and limit the damage. Please seek help. In the meanwhile something that I find helpful when I get the urges to this day is some kind of resistance training... lifting weights, push ups, using those therabands for exercise, anything where you using your muscles for "heavy work". It helps "ground" and center your nervous system and give you relief from the urges. Also find other ways to nurture yourself that at least for that moment takes away the option of cutting. Sometimes distraction can help until you can find someone to be with that can keep you from hurting yourself. Take care of yourself.

Right now the thing to do is distract yourself. Watch a movie, go for a walk, go chat to someone, anyone. Just remember that if you do hurt yourself you are gonna leave a big scar, and that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
You will either have to hide it forever or face some difficult questions.
I would seriously try and find someone to talk to about this. Once you start it's incredibly hard to stop.
I know, i have been there.
Good luck.

The best thing for you to do would be to get some professional help.
If you are acting out these urges, It may be a serious problem caused by a chemical imbalance.
If they are only thoughts, then some counciling may help. we all have natural curiosity when it comes to pain and our tolerances. the same can be said with our bodies. but you must realize, our skin is a major organ that defends against viruses that live outside our body that can kill us within 24 hours if we let them in. example staph!

A new friend comes over and she has
a nasty looking scar.
You can tell she did it herself.
I haven't asked her, but my first thought
was why would you do something so
terrible to yourself? Everyone you meet
must think you must have been NUTS.
When guys see it some probably get
turned off, and are afraid to date you.

Get help,
if you are in school tell your Teacher.

Pray for those feelings to leave.

Find a hobby.

This will make most mad, but there is a story in the Bible about a man who cut himself with rocks and such. Jesus came along and delivered him from this. He still works today.

Unless you're just trying to fit in, and think it's cool to do that.. Seek help. Talk to your parents or close friends about it.
