Something small and friendly. Go to akc.com and look at breeds in the toy group...you may get some ideas there.

Unless the fear is overcome I would say no breed. Bringing any dog into your house with even the slightest fear will not only take it's toll on the human but the dog as well. I tell anyone who wants to overcome fears of dogs to visit with their local shelter and start out with young puppies. The staff will also be able to find a dog who is friendly and would help ease your fears. From there you can progress to other breeds, sizes, ect. You also should understand some basic psychology of dogs so you understand why they act certain ways. Understanding will help calm you when a dog does something out of the ordinary. Once you feel comfortable and confident you can bring a dog into your home.

It depends on why you're afraid. If you're fraid of big dogs, then get a small one (Jack Russel Terrior, for example) If you're just afraid of being attacked, you might want to start off by going to the local animal shelter and getting an older dog, who is gentle. St. Bernards are good, and so are many mixes. Suprisingly, Blood Hounds are quite gentle. But you also have to consider what kind of land you have around you.
Hope it helps!

if the person is afraid of a dog any kind will make the person scared. the best thing to do is go to a shelter or pet store and handle the dogs carefully until one stands out.even a dog park where they can watch how the dogs behave will help.until the fear is overcome there is no point in getting a dog because the animal can sense this and it might take advantage of the person and become aggressive in nature.

well be for getting a dog the person must at least get used to petting a dog ,feeding it, and things like that with out getting scared . so the person might ask to be with a dog at like a shelter or a friends house?. OK then maybe get a small dog that would be the person can control

im assuming your afraid of hyperness and jumpy dogs.

so id recommend getting an older quiet rescue dog. have a look around and find a nice quiet one. and if its a little older its past jumpy puppy stage.

also alot of dog shelters do a rehoming process where you tell them what you want (which i assume is a quiet medium sized older dog) and they will bring out a few for you to see. this would also be good as you wouldnt have to walk round a load of jumpy dogs.

labs are very good. if you think about how good they are with blind people (obviosly these have had alot of training) but they are still very laid back if trained properly.

spaniels are also lovely and very relaxed.

but i really suggest you get a dog past puppy stage, this is when their jumpiest and hardest work

spend time with a friend who has good trained dogs. the bigger, the more docile usually. my best friend has a mastiff and it's the biggest baby in the world. it would rather lay in front of the couch and sleep all day than jump or lick anybody! another friend has a great dane. she 'hugs' everybody. she's sweet and friendly. never jumps or barks.
smaller dogs can be a little hyper and overly stimulated easily. they can be a little intimidating for someone who's afraid.

please don't consider owning a dog until you are completely comfortable with them. it will be bad all the way around.

Sorry, but I would have to say that there is no good breed of dog for people who are scared of dogs. Try a fish or a bird, if you are scared of dogs.

Why would someone who is afraid of dogs want one?

But if such a person MUST have a dog, you'll want one that is calm and not prone to barking or jumping. There are mutts that qualify in that, so I won't suggest any special breed.

But seriously- if you're afraid of dogs, don't get one.

No dog is right for you if you're afraid of dogs!

Even small ones, because small ones like to defend themselves a lot, and they tend to nip.

Big ones are actually calmer, although sometimes they can be aggresive too.

I suggest you get a cat instead, if you want a dog, because cats are almost always calm, and they're small, easy to care for, and cuddly!

Hope this helps!
Good luck!
