Here a couple of ideas.

Southern-Fried Chicken

1 3 lb chicken, cut up
1/3 cup butter milk
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup lard

1. Combine flour, salt and pepper in a paper or plastic bag. Dip chicken in the buttermilk. Shake one or two pieces of chicken in bag to coat.

2. In a large deep cast iron frying pan, melt lard over medium-high heat to 375 degrees. I use the splatter test, put a little water on your fingers and flip it into the grease, when it splatters the heat is right. Add chicken pieces and cook turning frequently until brown and crisp, 20 to 25 minutes. Drain on paler towels

Sweet potato pie.

Get some sweet potato's and cook them to mush.
Find a recipe for pumpkin pie and use the sweet potato's in place of the pumpkin. It is really good.

boiled peanuts is quintessential southern. but you have to have green peanuts and i doubt at this time of year you can come across those. of course ther are myriad amounts of southern foods that one may choose from . i was raised on the coast of south Carolina and what's staple there is not staple southern food in Tenn. or Va. so it just depends on what part of the south. a really good dessert is chess pie.
most Tennesseans relate to this .
chess pie: 2 whole eggs 1/2 cup milk
1 cup sugar 1/2 cup melted butter
1 T corn meal (don't skip ) 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
1 T flour 1 tsp. vanilla
mix all ingredients and pour into unbaked pie shell. bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes cool and enjoy the south. very , very sweet! Southerners love and i mean love their suga, suga!
And of course to kill a mockingbird is outstanding. it is still my favorite!
