I'm just curious as to how many christians are aware of this passage. When I saw it blew me away...

"Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, Love you neighbor as yourself." -- Romans13:8-10

So first, that seems that all those guys who go around preaching to people saying that they go to hell for not follow the commandments dont even know what they're talkin about.

Second, it seems according to the bible, you don't even have to be a christian to go to heaven. You just have to live with love.

Actually Chris the only way to go to hell is to walk down Picadilly Avenue in London, turn on the spot three times, count to 5 and then say "Hell," and there you go, your in hell.

Paul would say that the most loving thing you could do for neighbors is persuade them to repent of their sins and believe in Jesus Christ.

A big mistake is to say that since love fulfills the law we no longer have any need for commandments. Some people understand these verses to say that the only moral guideline Christians need is love. After all, verse 8 says that the only thing we owe one another is love, and that the one who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. Furthermore, v. 9 says that the different commands of the law are summed up in love. They argue, therefore, that we don't actually need commandments anymore. All we need to ask ourselves about any course of action is found in v. 10. Does our action actually hurt our neighbor? If it does not hurt our neighbor, if it does our neighbor good, then that action must be loving, and thus we fulfill the law, for Paul says in v. 10 that love is the fulfillment of the law. Those who believe this way bristle against imposing any commands upon believers. They think this is a form of legalism. They condemn as legalism any commands which say "you should do this, " or "you should not do this." They insist that believers are not under any "commands," except the command to love one another.

When Paul says that love is the fulfillment of the law, he does not intend to say that we have no need for commandments. To say that love is the fulfillment of the law does not imply that we can dispense with all commandments. Instead, specific commandments are mentioned in v. 9 so that we will see how love looks in action. One cannot commit adultery, murder, steal, and covet and claim to be loving. Specific commandments are given so that we will see in a concrete and practical way how love manifests itself in everyday life.
Paul only lists four commandments here, but we should not conclude from this that these are the only 4 commandments we need to keep in order to be loving. Notice in v. 9 that he adds the words "if there is any other commandment." In other words, Paul didn't have the time or space to list all the commandments for his readers. But his intention is clear. All the moral norms and absolutes of God's law describe what is involved in being loving. No one can claim to be loving, while at the same time he or she is violating God's commandments.

Why is it so important to have commandments in order to love one another? Because love without commandments so easily descends into vagueness or sentimentality. We can so easily deceive ourselves into thinking that we are loving because we have warm feelings towards other people. Love is easily confused in our society with being "nice." But "Minnesota nice" does not necessarily mean that one is acting in a loving manner. A person can be "nice" and at the same time be guilty of blatantly violating God's commands.

The 10 Commandments should still be kept. What some people don't understand is that there are TWO laws referred to in the Old Testament. There are the moral 10 commandments given to us by God himself, and then there are the ceremonial laws written by Moses for the Jews. When Christ died, the Bible says in Colossians 2:14 what was nailed to the cross were the handwritten ordinances of man. The 10 commandments were not handwritten by man, only the ceremonial laws were written by Moses were done away with because Jesus became that sacrificial lamb instead. The moral laws were given by God and will always be in effect. The New Testament says: John 14:15 If you love me, keep my commandments, Matthew 5:18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law. Revelation 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

As you see in your quote, the love commandment "sums up" the other commandments, not "nullifies" them.

That means, if you have true love, you will automatically follow the commandments, without having to think about them or feeling suppressed by them. If you don't follow the commandments, that shows you don't have true love. If you don't have true love (yet), following the commandments is an excellent way to practise love, so they certainly don't seem useless, null and void.

You're perfectly right, though, Christian shouldn't go around and judge others because they're not strong enough. If someone is weak you should help them, not condemn them.

As to who goes to heaven and who doesn't, that's up to God, not up to man. Everyone who says "I will go to heaven", "he will go to heaven", "you will go to hell", and so on, is only speculating. And this speculation is just plainly destructive.

The bible is a religiously accepted collection of letters, spiritual visions, and ancient texts bound into one "comprehensive" source for the purpose of propagating a newer and more powerful, patriarchal takeover of pagan worshipers and their livelihoods.

God speaks still today through many sources, but where are those documents? Why are some ancient texts left out of the Bible? Why do people insist the Bible is the word of God? There is no proof, just perception...And by the way, during the course of my studies of the bible, I was disturbed by the confusing, misleading, outright contradiction of historical accounts.

Symbolism grossly interpreted over generation after generation have distorted and taken out of context the writings of ancient spiritualists. Not to mention Bible Beaters who use the exact same scriptures to back up a multitude of subjects.

Jesus summed up all of the commandments with just 2 commandments.

Love thy God

Love thy neighbor and a bonus he said love thy enemy. All of the 10 commandments are still in effect but now are covered with these commandments.

Jesus kept it simple

You are taking a passage out of its context. Jesus himself said in Matthew "I have not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it" Plus, Paul is saying, in the passage you have, that Love is the all encompassing factor of the commandments and all of the law. If you truly love your neighbor, you will be obeying the commandments inherently. If you love someone, you will not do any of those things to them (ie, murder them, steal from them, sleep with their wives, etc) It says nothing about heaven in that passage. It is simply summing up the living law with love.

In the New Testament age (post Christ's death) the 10 Commandments serve to remind us of the law and, therefore, of our sin (because NO ONE can keep all of the commandments). So, this points us to our desperate need for the grace of Jesus -- he is our Savior. Even if we could adhere to all of the commandments all of the time, it wouldn't save us -- only the Son of God can. We are now under a new covenant (of free grace, not works) in Christ.

We are commanded to love Jesus and to love one another. Christians are given a new life through the Spirit which compels us to do this through trying to obey the 10 commandments. Ultimately, it drives us to dependency on the only person who obeyed all 10, and the only person that matters -- Christ.

Hope this helps! :)

Here's the deal, its not possible to love your neighbor as yourself without the Love of Jesus in your Heart. Impossible, It takes supernatural strength from on high to just not hate people in this world let alone love your neighbor as yourself and by the way your neighbor is everybody on the planet so if a guy kills someone in your family and then needs a kidney are you going to give him one?? Think about it, Jesus died on a Cross for you. He wants you to be born again. He wants you to trust him for your every need. He will give you the power which is the Holy Spirit that will come and live in your heart and the Spirit will give you the strength to love your neighbor as yourself. Are you ready to accept Jesus and be saved today? You can right now, Will confess to Jesus you are a sinner and that you need a Saviour? If you can do that just pray this simple sinners prayer believing in Jesus and he will wash your sins away and make you a new person in Jesus Christ, just pray Dear Jesus, I know and confess that I am sinner in need of salvation. I believe you died on a cross at calvery and arose from the grave to wash away my sins, I ask you right now to come into my heart and save me, I pray this Prayer believing in the name of Jesus Amen. If you prayed this prayer with a sincere heart you are now a child of God, rejoice that your name is written in the Lambs book of Life. Jesus will now send his Holy Spirit to come and live in your heart and guide you into all truth. If you have any questions just send me an email, God Bless YOU!!

This level of love is only possible through the love of God being imparted to you through the Holy Spirit, and that doesn't happen without becoming Christian.

Sprite tries to redefine Jesus' commands as being the o.t. commands required of Israel, and not Christians.
