Why was he prescribed Seroquel if this medicine is used to treat psychotic symptoms? He lost his wife three months ago and was having problems falling asleep. Now, he falls asleep 30 minutes after taking this medication. Is this drug addictive?

Seroquel is CLASSED in the Anti-Psychotic group of medications. This does NOT mean it is used to treat "Psychotic people", as you have made reference to in your question. Although many people mistakenly think this because of it's name.

Conditions treatable by Seroquel include Bi-polar (formerly Manic Depression), OCD, Schizophrenia, and like your friend,Chronic or short-term Sleeplessness.

It has also recently been approved to help treat illnesses with secondary complications to their Primary diagnosis in illnesses such as Depression and subsequent Anxiety.

Seroquel works by helping to "quell", or slow down, highly intrusive thoughts from ruminating around and around continuously in the patients mind.

Powerless to control,these racing thoughts it is often quite stressful in itself. Not surprising this keeps patients from being able to relax enough to drift off to sleep. Sleeplessness is obviously quite a common occurrence, following extreme emotional Stress or a traumatic event in a person's life.

Very effective, if used with precaution, Seroquel is a very safe, non-habit forming alternative to the psychologically addictive Benzodiazapines (such as Valium, and Xanax) which are also sometimes used for similar reasons to that of Seroquel. Dependence however, is a major concern with Benzos.

Seroquel though, is a relatively new alternative to these Benzodiazapines, proving just as effective, without having the same addictive properties.

This medication is NOT a sleeping tablet, nor is it an Anxiety medication or Anti-oxylitic, but can often have a sedative effect as it it works to "quiet the mind", making it easier for the patient relax enough to be able to sleep.

Sleep is naturally affected, as the brain fails to "switch off", causing over-stimulation and exhaustion to an already stressed out mind. Racing thoughts that are continuously ruminating around and around in the patients mind affecting their ability to fall into a state of sleep. Powerless to control,

Psychosis, however, in is it's true form, is a very different thing altogether,.disturbing and often severely dangerous to the patient. Manifesting in a number of different types of mental illness, it is usually secondary to the main diagnosis.

Your friend however, is not, by the information you've provided, NOT suffering from Psychosis. Just a lack of sleep induced by extreme Stress, by the sounds of it, triggered by passing of his Wife.

I hope this has helped you. A couple of years ago now, I used to take 300mg of Seroquel myself for Sleeplessness caused by Anxiety/Panic Disorder. 25mg is a VERY low dose, but if it is proving effective for your friend's problem that's obviously a good thing.

Best wishes to you both,
---Gracie ( :

Usually, at that low dosage, Seroquel is prescribed for anxiety or an eating disorder. It can be very disorienting and make you very sleepy in the beginning - Ideally, you would be able to take a few days often while your body adjusts. Within a couple weeks, it should make a much less intense impact. For now, I'm afraid, all you can do is rest. Take good care.

~~~Seroquel works~~~ After years of not being able to sleep, this tablet is a god send. I would go to bed between 10pm and midnight, read for and hour or 2 (sometimes not at all because I thought it might over stimulate my mind), then I would lay there, tossing and turning for hours, I would manage to fall asleep for 15 to 20 minutes, only to begin the tossing and turning for hours again. I would lay there all night with my mind racing, playing games in my mind example, words that don't contain any vowels, let me tell your, there are hundreds, gypsy, fry, sky, pygmy, rhythm and the list goes on. I have tried every sleeping tablet here is, only to take hours to fall asleep for an hour to lay awake again all night.
The first time I took Seroquel I began to feel slightly relaxed within 30 minutes, then I actually wanted to turn my light off and go to sleep (which was unheard of for me). I slept for an hour or 2, rolled over and go to back to sleep within minutes. For more than 15 years I have tried everything, only Seroquel works for me.
Doctors will prescribe Seroquel as both an anti-psychotic and a sleep aid.
You have to tell him to keep monitoring his hear rate as this drug can raise it without one knowing it. My wife was on it an then all of a sudden at a routine medical exam, her heart rate was around 120 to 130. It took about a month and visits to heart doctors and monitoring to finally find out that it was the Seroquel. She stopped it, and heart rate has finally slowed down to at least 100.
I checked out the symptoms at webmd.com and read about this long before the docs figured it out.
Good luck to your friend.
most of the time i see people prescribed ambien or trazodone for sleep but i've never really seen seroquel,
although that seroquel WILL knock you out, maybe the doctor had a specific reasoning for giving him that instead of an actual sleeping pill. maybe he's having other symptoms related to the loss of his wife that were discussed primarily with his doctor and not everyone else?
Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!
