I would guess that it comes down to a few factors. One, people want what other people have, whether it's land, wealth, or control. Two, religion rarely admits to the possibility that its own belief system is not the one true way to believe, and assumes the moral rightness of forcing others to adopt that belief.

Here's the kicker my friend. "Religious Wars" have rarely been about religion. They have been about power, money, territory and survival.
Religion has been the easiest way to motivate nations of the devout to give kill and die. What more noble cause than to die in the service of your God can there be.
It's easier to kill another human if you can believe that they are less than you in God's eyes. If they are less human. Look at all the old war posters and prejudices. They were created to make you hate the enemy and make the word "enemy" personal. People fight better when they feel what they are doing is just, right and honorable.
God has not made mistakes. People have made mistakes about God. And people use His name to justify and give credence to violence.
I'm sure He's pissed.

Hey, salam, salame, you are ignoring the fact that that was basically politics. Besides, the human being is biased.
We are very imperfect.
The only ones who really practice their faith have been the saints.
All the others, in spite of saying that we profess a certain faith, have the tendency to look at whoever doesn't see things the same way as us with suspicion, believing, deep in our hearts, that he is not to be trusted.
Here, the very primitive idea of the tribe ( that still lurks in the bottom of our minds ) takes charge.
The human being is still too primitive

I'd have to see a list of wars you considered as started for religious reasons. The Crusades, for example, were not religious but used a religious excuse to cover up the real purpose. I would say very few wars were actually started over religious reasons, but would incorparate religion to bolster support.

You are emphasing RELIGIOUS REASON. It is gross exageration and wrong thinking.
You have put saveral questions in one. It is not possible for me to answe all of them though I can answer one at a time and prove this concept of accusing religion is wrong.
The leader who wages a war against people of another religion always misuses religious believes of his people to excite them so they give their lives under his directions so he fullfills his own ambitions and motives what ever he has to wage the war.
Only real Prophets of God like Moses and Mohammad has wages wars on the commands of God and not for selfish reasons. Mainly those wars were to liberate people from false gods created by men to subjugate poor people and take advantage of their innocence. Prophets of God never have selfish motives. They never fought wars to get rich.
When Prophet Mohammad was near death, he asked all his wives to bring what ever money they had. They all did and total coins were 14. He went out and distributed all 14 coins amongst poor people. Prophet left his wives under the care of God. Since these were announced by God Himself as
Mothers of believers, after Prophet died, successors of Prophet took much much better care of these mothers than Prophet himself could in his life.

Look, the simple fact is - no war was ever started BECAUSE of religion.
Wars were started over territory, resources, or other tangibles. Religion was simply a useful tool for the leaders because it allowed them to manipulate the populous into going along with the war fanatically.

I am not religious, but I don't like it when people cite this fact. The four biggest mass murderers of all time are atheists and they killed more people than any religious war ever. They are: Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, Mao Zedong, Pol Pot.

War is about greed, power and control. If your theory was correct then the atheistic countries like China and Russia would be havens of love reason and enlightenment..They are not. Man is the problem not religion.

Because human beings are naturally selfish and want to control others. It has nothing at all to do with any god and everything to do with survival.
