One of the basic principles of most martial arts is called "Concentration of force". You hit, kick, or punch something and try to concentrate the force on the smallest area possible but yet strong enough to absorb the shock and impact. This has the affect of making it stronger. If you ask which people would rather get hit with, a golf-ball going ninety miles per hour or a soft-ball going sixty, they almost always pick the soft-ball which is the right answer. There are some aspects that run contrary to this as well such as in Chinese martial arts such and striking with the palm or open hand.

Because as to increase the pressure .Pressure is force/area of contact.If the area of contact is very small , force being the same, pressure comes out to be large and hence more effective.

also in the highest levels of karate the strikes are focused on small nerve centers and must be struck with pinpoint accuracy for effectiveness

wen there is a small area of contact the pressure/impact at that point increases as pressure is inversly proportional to surface area............so the impact for that particular amount of orce would be really high...
