I'm a fan of oil paintings, but if I had to choose between acrylic or pastel, I'd say acrylic.

It depends on what you are better with. I know people who can do it very well with pastels. However I think for most people it's easier to do it with acrylics. It's easier to make smooth bits in you're work and it's not too much work to make the necessary fuzzy bits. With pastels it's much harder to make the soft smooth surfaces. On the other hand if it's kittens or puppies pastels might be great because the animals are fuzzy. It all comes down to personal preference. I would say try both and see what is easier and more suited to your personal style.

Try acrylics because it's water based and early mistakes can be wiped off. Pastels can smudge if you're not careful.
Best thing to do is try both in small amounts (not that costly)
I did that and liked acrylics the most.

I use pastels most of the time for pet portraits. It's fast and the results are rather soft looking. Very pleasing.

Depends how good you are at either medium. You can do cute in both. For quick and fuzzy pastels are maybe a bit more handy.
