What I meant was can I exit that same country with a different passport then that which I use to enter?

Some countries have "exit controls" and some don't. For those with exit controls you'll have to leave the same way you got there.

The United States has a law that anyone claiming American citizenship, dual or otherwise, must enter and exit the United States on an American passport.... no exceptions. If you claim American citizenship and get caught entering or exiting on a foreign passport you will forfeit your American citizenship.

Make sure you enter and exit the country with the same passport, since there is a record kept, you could have problems with law, they may think you are different person.
Be careful!

I would use the same passport you used to enter the country. In any of my international travels, they've stamped my passport with the entry date when I got there, and stamped it again when I've left. I guess to make sure I'm not overstaying the time limit. In these times you can't be too careful about following the rules, so you're not considered "a person of interest".

depends on the country

example: westerners entering Indonesia -- your tourist visa will be physically attached to the passport you use to enter the country and you can not exit the country without surrendering it -- and the visa states on it your nationality [passport used on entry].

counter example: control in Taiwan isn't as strict and I could easily have exited on a different passport than the one I entered on, if I had a second one.

it depends some countries do not allow dual citizenship you have to exit the country with the same passport with you entered, otherwise you will be asked for a visa.
