I would say yes. If you just look at the questions hear on Yahoo Answers, the questions where people as what language they should learn, a good majority of the responses say that they should learn Mandarin Chinese. With the economy of China become so powerful it would seem like a smart move. Also, the fact that they have the highest level of speakers (even surpassing native English speakers) there is even more incentive to learn it. I myself plan on learning Chinese as well. However, right now I am trying to learn Japanese because I plan to attend an International school in Japan next school year. But being an International Business major I definitely see many reasons as to why I should learn Chinese as well.

Hope this answers your question.

In the 1970s there was a big rush to learn Russian when the Soviet Union's economy lookd like it would dwarf the, then much smaller, European economy (although it was less integrated than today). This wave soon retreated, even during the 1980s, when it seemed that this was not the case.

The Chinese economy is growing quickly, but the idea that you MUST learn Chinese in order to take part in the future economy is a misapprehension and at worst a scare-story. English is so deeply embedded around the world the Chinese would have to influence every single foreign country to adopt its model. That is an unlikely outcome.

Ask your kids to coach you to jot down chinese language characters lah. Don't fear. When Mandarin turns into an worldwide language. You and me are already historic ample to retire. Why English is the one worldwide language?Because it's used for trade and medical functions. And it's considering English assimilates plenty of overseas language into their vocabulary. Will Mandarin turns into an worldwide language? It is determined by what number of worldwide businessmen use it.And regularly, it's going to end up a systematic language too while China has probably the most subtle technology science on the earth. At the equal time,I expect China will difference herself from a communist nation to a democratic one while her residents are becoming extra literate in long term.It alterations because of an additional revolution just like the Union Soviet did.

What do you exactly mean by "popular"?

But Chinese is getting a lot of attention from everybody. Many say (I am not sure WHY they only repeat what they have been told) that Chinese will take over English as the most important lingua franca.

What is true is that MANY people is interested now in learning it.

well globally, it is popular because of the population of china. however, many foreign businesses are having their employees learn chinese in case they ever decide to business overseas. i used to live in america for pretty much my whole life until my dad had to move to shanghai for an overseas assignment for his company. i hear a lot of the schools in the states are offering chinese as an elective. i personally find chinese a pain in the neck to learn. too many characters to memorize. it's actually a very complicated language.
