Edmunds.com verifies your assertion, and has a bit more to say on the matter, so check the link below. But simply asking everyone to reduce speed across the board is oversimplifying the matter: In any case, each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed, or range of speeds, but gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph.
We can all do a lot to improve our gas consumption. If it takes a few minutes longer to reach your destination, so what? If you drive in a rush all the time you increase your chances of being involved in an accident.

If it's the highway that you take to work, yes driving slower saves gas. Gas consumption raises exponentially when you travel faster than 65MPH.
Traveling at 80MPH usually gets you less MPG than what is listed as estimated city MPG for your car.
You will get home a few minutes later @ 65 but your gas savings over a year could be substantial...which means less CO2 emissions.

In 2 ways actually. Like the first answerer said, you burn less fuel, and the fuel has more time to be completely burnt, causing less carbon residue.
About it taking more time to get somewhere, calculate for yourself what the real difference would be in arriving at your destination when you drive 10 miles an hour slower. You'll probably be surprised how little time you really win by driving faster.
Good luck with it.

Actually, driving slower does reduce CO2 emissions. The reason is that you get a bit better gas mileage--thus burning less gas for a given distance traveled.

The more gas you use the more emissions are expelled, so if you drive slow it takes longer to get some where, but if you drive fast it uses more gas to get there, but in a shorter time. I guess it is a study some one has done. Guess i really don't know, i think it would balance out. Now I'll have to research this farther to satisfy my own brain.

No.
But we need to worry more about cows. They're the real culprits. We wouldn't have to worry about are cars if cows didn't exist. Why if we didn't eat meat (*sob*) we could all be driving SUVs (*sob*) Don't believe me? Here:
