I broke my collar bone on Wednesday, and the Dr gave me Vicodin for the pain. This morning the discomfort is considerable, and I am wondering if it is safe to take some Advil in addition to the Vicodin. I suppose I could take more Vicodin, but it makes me feel loopy and slightly naseuos. Advice, please?

dear loopee. the Vicodin does work, however this am my collarbone/shoulder just a little more than it has been in the mornings. I am going to try taking the ibuprofin and see it that helps, because more of the Vicodin is not what I want.

Vicodin (both of its ingredients) and advil are from different drug families; it is safe to take them concurrently (at the same time); in fact, it may actually be helpful.

Some pain treatment drugs work together in a way that is called "potentiation". One drug when given may take only say 40% of the pain, and another only take 30%, but when given together they might take 100%. That's why its common to give drugs togther- like acetaminophen with codeine, for example, or excedrin which has acetaminophen and aspirin.

Vicodin itself is a combination drug: hydrocodone bitartrate 5mg and 500mg acetaminophen; if you are taking only 1 vicodin, you can add one Extra strength acetaminophen (500mg)- but you should not take more than 1000mg (1g) of paracetamol more than 4 times a day (4000mg in total) as it can be toxic. You can safely add 200-400mg of Ibuprofen (advil) as that is the over-the-counter amount; but you can only ttake advil 3 times a day really, 8 hours apart. Adding ibuprofen (advil) in may help-
but-
Vicodin is a strong drug. Contact your doctor - it may be that either a higher dose is needed (and there are stronger preparations available), or that there is physically something that is preventing the pain medication from working (like the bone not healing properly). Although its not as common to have there be a complication, it's best to have it checked.

In order to help your body use the medication, make sure you are resting, getting enough water to drink (6-8 glasses a day), and are resting the affected arm. Putting heat or cold on the break may help some pain relief.

Good luck and hope you are feeling better soon- broken bones are all rough, but the collarbone is in a difficult place (it is moved ust by breathing) so its especially challenging. Get well soon!

Advil and Vicodin go well together.

One should be VERY careful about Tylenol and Vicodin because Vicodin already has some Tylenol in it (the second number in the Vicodin name refers to how many mg of Tylenol the tablet contains so Vicodin (5/500) contains 500 mg of Tylenol). Healthy folks should not exceed a total of 4,000 mg of total Tylenol in a day.

Be careful about this - overdoses of Tylenol can cause liver failure which is a very ugly way to die.

My son used to be identified with ADD. Fortunately, he used to be no longer hyperactive. That being the change. Behavior amendment labored good for my son on the grounds that he used to be no longer Hyperactive. If he have been, we might have long past with the therapy. There are such a lot of med choices to be had. It's no longer like a few years in the past wherein the one alternative used to be Ritalin. Not that Ritalin is a foul path of meds to make use of, it simply wasn't the proper med for each and every baby with ADHD. I might discover the therapy with meds. You can continuously give up the meds if there are hostile reactions. You would possibly must check out specific meds to uncover the one who exceptional suits your baby's demands. It's no longer an specific technology. As you mentioned, the therapy is as much as the father and mother, so it kind of feels that the document and the professional are of little support. They are going by way of your selections. Give them the advantage of the doubt till you notice how the therapy works. If you're nonetheless uncomfortable with the medical professional's advocate or therapy, uncover a brand new document and get a moment opinion.
