Beagles are high-energy dogs - not high-strung - high energy. They do require a good amount of exercise and are problem solvers, so they will be easily bored, which leads to destruction. As someone said, they like to dig. If your Beagle is well-exercised, he/she will not necessarily feel the need to "entertain him/herself."
Beagles are wonderful with children. They're very tolerant. Of course, no dog should be left unattended with a child - for everyone's safety. If a child were to annoy a Beagle it would be likely to leave instead of biting/nipping. Generally on the fight or flight continuum, Beagles are way at the flight end.
Beagles are *not* stubborn. A good dog trainer knows that not every dog can be taught by the same method. It is up to the trainer/owner to figure out what motivates his or her dog. (This goes for all breeds.) You will not get very far with a Beagle using force. They have no desire to deal with someone who is hurting them. Most Beagles respond very well to training with food.
As with every breed, there are pros and cons with Beagle ownership. I would not trade my 3 for $1,000,000. They are affectionate, playful and very entertaining. My dogs don't howl, although they do bark if there is something outside the fence. They are good watch dogs, but not good protection dogs.

Beagles are great dogs. Mine loves everyone, as do my other three dogs, and is great with children. He is the last one to get excited about something. The other three, a Chi/Rat Terrier and two Pit Bulls, will start the barking at something and the Beagle will ignore it all until he thinks it might need his attention then he goes into that hound bay. He is not a digger or stubborn. I didn't even have to house train him. The Chi/Terrier taught him how to use the dog door.
He is a chow hound and will do anything for food. I have trained that when I whistle there is a treat coming. The very few times the dogs have gotten out all I have done is step on the front porch and whistle and they come running with the Beagle leading the pack.
The beagle is a clown and always doing something funny. I have caught him in my bed between my pillows, well take a look.

I am glad to hear that you have done your homework & are making decisions based on what type of dog will most likely match your interests My family never raised Jack Rusells but we raised many others & beagles we raised many of -- my mother-in-law has 2 jack russels, really sweet, but they get on my nerves (and that is not easy for an animal to get on my nerves, but the are so yappy & jumpy) No, we were never a puppy mill, my Dad created line of International Field Champion bloodline beagles... we had a 400 acre farm & there was plenty of room (no crowded dogs) Bear in mind that our goal was champion hunters & your goal is to have a good house pet Beagles are Hudini dogs.. they are true escape artists They like to Howl They bark at anything that moves They are natural instinct hunters, don't be alarmed when your beagle kills a bird or a mouse or a rabbit They are chewy when young... keep things they are allowed to chew on in stock so they don't choose your shoes or table legs They are very inquisitive & smart They like to be higher up -- I think that might be a hunting thing... the Beagles liked to be on top of the dog house...... the Aussie Shepards never got on top of the dog houses... neither did the German Shepards.......... my Carolina Dog also likes to be up high & is a natural hunter They do better when not bored (However, they do better bored than a JackRussel would) They are very easily distracted & independant minded -- some folks see that as stuborn They need on-going & consistant training.. patience is a virtue

Tom should be able to answer you on this one. There are different bloodlines of beagles. Not all beagles are bred to hunt or field bred!!!!
Added after I got home from the dog show today in Ft. Wayne Indiana. I would reason to bet, hardly any of the beagles that were exhibited today in the show would know what to do with a rabbit. I personally like the temperments in the show bred beagles over the field bred beagles. They are a lot of work, they are not stubborn dogs if you know what you are doing training wise with them. They are wonderful with kids as well.

Beagles always stink, even after a bath. They shed alot too. Also the bark they have is very annoying, and they constantly sniff everything and everyone. I also they are big roamers so they cant be off a leash for a minute. But be careful with the leash you use, because they pull all the time. So in my opinion I would never own a beagle.

I recommend adopting a Beagle, you'll be saving a life and money too. If you buy from a breeder you'll just be filling his or her pocket and encourage them to breed more, which may end up in shelters later on anyway.
Here are all the Beagles that are up for adoption http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?animal=Dog&breed=Beagle&preview=1&exact=1 . Just look through here for your state. You can even add your town. Just make sure that you put your states initials after it and separate them with a comma.

They are hunting dogs . Not reccomended for apartment life for alot of reasons .They are very stubborn and are difficult to train . I have one beagle dog in my pack and he does bay/ howl . They like to listen to themselves howl . They are best suited for people who have large yards either with a fence or a farm . If you dont like sheddding , baying , howling and stubborness during training then a beagle is not right for you .

Don't get one from a pet shop. No matter what they tell you, they all come from puppy mills. Go to a shelter or to Petfinder.com

Beagle are high strung and not advisable around children. They make great farm dogs to roam around.

They do "bay", not bark. Kinda a howling bark.
They generally are diggers,.. so if you treasure a lush green lawn,.. forget it.
They are cute as a button and great loyal family dogs. (may have a tendency for ear problems though)
