I'm starting to look for an artist to do my first tattoo.
A lot of people think that most of the studios in my town are really sketchy, so I want to know what questions I need to ask and what I should look for in a studio.

Are will they show me copies of their health inspections? Should I try and find those reports elsewhere?

it's not so much about asking questions first it's about finding a talented artist. i have found that artists who are TRULY talented don't work in sketchy shops because they are less likely to get good, quality clientele who will utilize their talent. it is generally a rule that not every city has a great artist. the closest tattoo artist that i would let tattoo me lives three and a half hours away but in my opinion it's worth it to make the drive to have an amazing tattoo that will last a lifetime. where do you live? email me and i'd be happy to help you find a talented artist who can do what you want.
by the way, what tattoo do you want? something generic or do you want a custom tattoo?

Any *good* tattooist will be happy to answer any questions. Ask to see the actual studio where they work, where they keep their equipment, to see the autoclave, and ask what their hygiene rules are.

Look to see that they are wearing single-use disposable latex gloves, and that they are opening new, sealed needles and inks for each client.

Some will also let you watch them work {with the client's permission}. This often gives you a better idea of their skill than just looking at portfolios.

Ask about sterilization techniques, to be sure they are clean. Also, take a look around to make sure the shop is clean. Ask the artist if they have a portfolio or some pictures of their work. This way you can catch a glimpse of their abilities. Also, bring your ideas/artwork with you so that you can discuss size and placement, if you chose to go with that particular artist. Good luck, hope it turns out for ya!

Before I got a tattoo I'd want to look at previews of their work wile evaluating the atmosphere , staff , and procedures used. If I still were not comfortable - I would need to ask in what way are the instruments cleaned between clients .
