Jesus personally gave the apostles the power to forgive sins in his name, and the authentic Christian church has been doing so, ever since.
Who are you to say otherwise?
It was the most proactive, head on attack against satan, sin, and death that the world has ever known ... and there is still no better way.
It was also the very first thing Jesus did after his resurrection, so it must have been a very high priority in God's overall plan for our salvation.
Read your bible again. You're selecting the wrong "proof texts" ... and you're obviously listening to the wrong teachers.
Joh 20:19 Now when it was late the same day, the first of the week, and the doors were shut, where the disciples were gathered together, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said to them: Peace be to you.
Joh 20:20 And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord.
Joh 20:21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you.
Joh 20:22 When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost.
Joh 20:23 Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them: and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.

I am not a catholic, but I can answer that question for you.
A. The Priest acts as a listener, something like a friend.
B. The Priest helps you to pray as well, being the fact a good priest who follows the commandment well will be on the good book of the god.

- The fact that you're sharing your "sins" to another person, in this case a priest, shows that there's seriousness in your attempt to change.
- A priest is also not allowed to share your confession to other people.
- A priest is not very likely to judge you.

Catholicism is heavily built on rituals that have been around for centuries, and making confession to a priest is just one of them.
The priest is also there to give religious guidance and advice, to any problems or spiritual dilemmas you may be facing.

i cannot directly answer your question but i wish to write a little about something related. i was born into a catholic family but i am no longer catholic. and the reason i am not is because of the hypocracy i believed is involved in that religion. it really makes no sense to me. Catholics swear upon the bible and say that one should live their life based on what it says yet catholics due things that it specifically says in the bible not to do. for example, most people are aware that in the bible it talks about how we should only worship god. its in the ten commandments for gosh sake. and yet catholics worship and pray to saints and the virgin mary. dont get me wrong all of the saints and the virgin mary were amazingly great people. but that still doesnt make it ok to worship them and ask them to help us as if they had godly power. I get mad at the thought of that. if one of the ten commandments a person swears to live by talks about not worshiping other gods how can you turn around and worship and pray to something else! catholicism to me is just another example of peoples ignorance. so many people go to church and they dont even know what they are going for. so many people judge other religions and believes when they only go to church three times a year and have never read even a chapter in the bible! i always tell people who began to debate the subject. that if you are going to speak on behalf of god that which you say you worship. then atleast know a little something about him. I cannot stand catholicism im sorry.

i think that would be because some people are want assurance that their sins would be forgiven so they confess to priests and believe that upon doing the assigned prayers they have to pray they are forgiven....

yeah.
priest is only a human. how can they forgive another human's sin?
since priest himself also has his own sin.
even jesus can not forgive anyone's sin when he(jesus) is alive.
that's why jesus tell people to ask for forgiveness from god..??

I believe that the priest is a vessel for you to speak your sins to and he delivers the advice/penance appropriate for your sin...
