Terry, My and your innerself is nothing but blood and guts. The only " innerself" in your context can only be your mind. Think about that.

SDW, your variety of spirituality is best defined as "enthusiasm" or else we are backto the same olde.

Tmuthiah is right of course, but i guess i should have said i was looking for the best argument against my question " is spiritual atheist an oxymoron?" Parrots defense of spiritual atheism is that Atheists may believe in spirits and an afterlife world . But he also maintains that the Christian God did not create it and is not necessarily the head of it . And in that way an atheist can be spiritual. This is the best defense to the statement that atheists are spiritual. IMHO we will all find out that answer in the next 8 yrs.

No, it's not an oxymoron. The only requirement for atheism is that you can't believe in a personal god. But atheists can, and sometimes do, believe in ghosts, reincarnation, psychic phenomena, the existence of the soul or spirit, an afterlife... pretty much anything else that doesn't involve a personal god.

Is that common? Not really. But it's certainly possible, and I know of many who could be put in that category.

To the people who say "how can you believe in spiritual things but not God?": Well, their definition of spirituality is different than yours. There are many who just hold the opinion that a 'spirit world' exists but doesn't need a supreme creator to run the place; it just exists. Obviously there are many who would disagree with that conclusion, but like I said, spirituality means different things to different people, and to some people, that conclusion just makes more sense.

Defiantly not - spirituality is about the way one meets the world

Not believing in a god does not stop one getting in contact with ones inner self and the inner self of others. Buddhism is atheist, yet it is the most spiritual of all religions.

Indeed I would ask - Is spirituality possible for some religions?

Spiritual Atheist is an oxymoron.
When you believe in spirituality, it follows that you believe in
the existence of soul. Soul is neither me nor you. Physically, biologically ,psychologically and intellectually unknown. When you accept spirituality , then you disagree with atheism. It is a fragmentation of mind.

I always thought it was...

The supernatural is intrinsic/ implicit in anything spiritual, so to try to divide them from one another is a fool's errand...

You don't have to believe in a god to believe in ghosts...

Ghosts are spiritual things...and therefore supernatural...

So how do you separate the spiritual from the supernatural?

In the context of religion, yes.

However spirituality doesn't have to be restricted to religion, so in the grand scheme of things it can be defended quite staunchly.

Kinda depends on your definition of spirituality. To each his own.
