Why is it the price of holidays go up during school holidays, the hotels do not seem to benefit from the higher prices if anything the more people travelling the lower the price, now why is it our Goverment has done nothing to stop these travel agents from upping the prices, my holiday at the end of October cost over £200 more because I work at a school and I did not have any children with me and there were NO children staying at the Hotel, is it not time our Goverment stamped this sort of practise out.

It's simple supply and demand business. If you have a limited stock and more people want it you can charge a higher price. The price of wellington boots goes up in autumn. The price of suntan lotion goes up in June. It's just the way of the world

It's economics. One of the first things you learn in economics is about demand and supply. Basically, the higher the demand, the higher the price. A lot more people want to travel during the school holidays, so the travel industry (from flights to hotels), know that they can charge more and people will still buy their services. At other times of the year they know that if they tried to charge the higher prices they would end up with empty hotels/flights.

It's not fair for teachers or parents, but when all teachers and parents are trying to cram their holiday into those few weeks the tour operators at home and abroad will continue to charge extra. Our Government can do nothing about the cost of foreign hotels etc. even if they wanted to.

The only thing which might help is to stagger the school holidays, so e.g. different regions have their holidays at different times, and at different times to other countries? That way the demand would not be concentrated on those few weeks.

I totally agree with you. I own a holiday home in Spain and we keep the price the same all year round out of principal.

That said people ask us for a discount when it's not school holidays so you can't win whatever you do.

Since government in the UK has made it a criminal offence to take your Children on holiday outside of school breaks, the travel trade - no doubt lobbying parliament - rub their hands together and make all their profit in this period. You can't fight the guys with the vested interest. Just don't go on holiday away from home during school breaks, just make day trips. Soon the trade will realise that they have to do something radical to get back your custom.
