Ok, so a few of my friends enjoy saying that all atheists are really saying they know everything if they say God does not exist. Usualyy I just tell them that Athiests just have "faith" that God does not exist. But what is a better more intelligent way to answer this statement?

I tell them like it is. That's too much for them. They cannot take it. They have based their 'assumption' on an 'assumption' that there is no proof of God. That's an assumption. It's not a fact, so therefore they are basing their beliefs on faith.

I also wrote this a while ago.

Okay, they don't need any proof to swallow what it is they believe. And yet they deny that emphatically. So therefore they are in denial about something they have no clue of; that's not scientific.

So while they are espousing Atheism, they admit to being unscientific ( ipso facto), and therefore illogical to the Methods of Science. It's obviously important to them, many are here every single day preaching it.

They attribute logic to other things perhaps, but by definition they are irrational and faithful to their beliefs of God's existence.

I would not ask for logic from a people who are by definition wandering away from the very precepts they attest to, and yet living in the conflict of their own denial.

You cannot get a rational answer from such a person whose demeanor is set so deep in denial. They will rationalize their answers; some by avoiding the question, and some by denying the charge.

And yet, people in denial react by acting accused because they feel like they are under pressure. They feel guilty.

Atheists don't say god does not exist. Otherwise it would be a religion. They say it is extremely unlikely that gods exist. That they do not believe that there are any gods.

Do you require "faith" to think of Santa that way? Is not believing Santa is real a religion? Of course not. Same applies with gods and atheists.

"Faith" belief that is not based on proof.

so your belief is just as valid as their faith, until they can prove otherwise.

You can say that if a God, or some other deity, exists then you simply have yet to see any compelling evidence or felt anything strong enough in which to personally make you believe what they believe.

If they believe in the possibility or existence, then it is equally possible for you to believe the contrary.

Unless you want to open up this can of worms, with will undoubtedly lead to 20 questions, stories of how they've personally been touched, being subjected to scriptures (their so called book of facts), or even hear of Marian Apparitions , then I wouldn't even try it with them.

Because many of them get so defensive and then start thinking that you hate Christians. When in fact, they are the ones that are the least tolerant.

If they really want to understand what Atheism is--real "There is no supernatural" Atheists, not just the Dawkins-style "This is why religious people are stupid" Atheists--tell them to read 'Atheist Universe' by David Mills. He's a normal guy who explains and defends his position, rather than turds like Richard Dawkins who just go around trying to show why religions are wrong and dodging questions when he doesn't feel like answering them.

Athiests (like me) would be interested to see evidence of God's existence. It's not that we have "faith" that he doesn't exist - so long as we don't see evidence for God's existence, there's simply no reason to believe he exists.

Say that we're atheists because there are no gods. I have faith in nothing other than myself.

Probably the standard answer is: An atheist does not believe in god. But their beliefs are as different as they are.

As I see it, you arent too far off. Atheists simply take a different side on a question than the religious, when in doubt, and atheist chooses No. When in doubt, a theist chooses Yes. That's about all I can see.
