"nice day" sounds a bit too suggestive.

Just start by saying 'hello' and asking how that persons been and what they're up to, what they've been up to, what did you reckon of ...
It is a more natural way of starting a conversation that will make people feel more comfortable.

Ask something.....Like do you have the time. Do you know where........ Whats your name, I havent seen you around here before where you from.......Things like that.. That will take the pressure off of you and on to them. Women like talking about themselves and if there interested they'll give you an answer that will allow you to continue the convo....Dont try too hard to be funny at least at first because it will either come off as cheasy, crude, or unoriginal. Its alotta risk for not much reward.

Your facial expressions and the tone of your voice will ALWAYS dictate how the conversation proceeds regardless of the question, comment, or whom you are speaking with.
Before you even say the very first word, you should already have the biggest most sincere smile you can muster on your face.

Depends on how old you are.
School aged = talk about class, teachers, homework, etc...
College = talk about professors & assignments, majors, career goals, etc...
Adult = talk about work, boss, kids, marriage, cost of things, etc...
What you saw on the news last night, did you see that new movie that came out. Can you believe the weather that we are having. Dont you hate it when people.... type questions.

A useful hi there or Hi! is a best dialog starter, additionally ask how their day went or how it's going and do such as you rather imply it! I consider while your honest you get plenty extra with a talk.

Definitely start with a question. After that, just build up from there, asking questions and answering questions.

good ways:

"did you do the homework"?
"how has your day been?"
"what have you been doing?
