Whenever I come to work, there are people greeting me and then "Hey, where have you been...?"

And it's just not once or twice, but all the freaking time.

I'm extremely paranoia so I'm guessing they are pretending to be nice so that they could use me later?

I can understand why, especially if you respond the way you do here. They are trying to establish a healthy and productive working environment. In order to work well with someone, you have to establish a working relationship with them. It's much easier to work with someone who is positive and friendly, than with one who is pessimistic and mean. As far as using you, in a way, that is true. If you ever end up working on a project together, the time they spend being friendly to you now will help things progress more smoothly in the future. Time spent being nice to someone is never wasted. You should try being friendly in return. You never know when you might need help from someone in the office, and it is much easier to get a favor from a friend, than from an antagonist. This is simply basic social constructivism. Mathematically (since I think that is what you probably understand best), in a group dynamic what benefits the group benefits the individual. Friendliness, courtesy, and comeraderie in the workplace promotes better cooperation, coordination, and teamwork, which increases productivity, loyalty, job satisfaction, and a general good working environment. When all of these things are working together, everyone benefits. Does that mean they are being pretentious? Maybe, but with the goal of improving your outlook and being better able to work together with other people in the office. That benefits you as much as it benefits them.

Long story short, stop being paranoid. You're only keeping yourself from enjoying the friendships being offered, and holding yourself back professionally as well.
