Ok first off when mixing drinks the first ingredient is always ICE!!!! You can strain your drink to be ice-free, but always mix over ice.

Now: Get rid of the whiskey and buy some bourbon! Sorry, I'm from Kentucky.

Mixers for bourbon or whiskey include:

water, club soda, cola, lemon-lime soda, ginger-ale, sour mix.

For gin: tonic water, sour mix, orange juice, club soda

For rum: cola, juice mixes, sour mix

For vodka: pick something, vodka mixes with everything besides Captain Crunch cereal, though you'd be pegged as a rookie at a bar for ordering vodka and cola.

Beer mixers? Only one I know of is a Shandy, mixing beer with ginger ale. No, wait, I've heard people mix beer with tomato juice, as well. Ruining a damn good beer, I'm sure.

Wine mixers: Really? Wine is made for pairing with food. Sure, there are spritzers and such, but don't bother.

And now brandy. I have heard of many brandy recipes. However, the only time in my 20 years of bartending and serving I have actually heard brandy being ACTUALLY ordered with a mixer was once when an older lady asked me for a Brandy Alexander. Couldn't tell you what was in it then, (or now, I had to look in a bartender's guide.) Check out a recipe online.

Now the one thing that has always bothered me about mixed drinks: people who order them and then say they can't taste any alcohol; i.e., the drink is too weak.

Mixed drinks were made so you DON'T TASTE THE ALCOHOL!!!!! If you want to taste it order a spirit on the rocks! Or some horrid concoction such as a Long Island Tea.

Hope I helped you out.....drink responsibly - let someone else buy your drinks and then drive you home :)
