That is a Mastiff mix. He is NOT overweight. I would reccomend a new vet if they said so. His body is the perfect example of a healthy dog.
Also, if you look up the Mastiff, you will see that breed classified as a GIANT breed, not just large breed.
I agree with the post about feeding the same, but split it into two meals.
You don't want your dog to become food agressive, which can happen. This is because through the day, their metabolism eats up all of the calories and then they suffer for the last 8-10 hours each day and this causes the muscle to begin breaking down to use for energy.
If you feed in the morning, and then 8 hours later, the dog's system will get a good balance....
(Have you tried going 23 hours a day without eating?)
Anyway, you have a beautiful dog.
For reference, an adult male Mastiff should weigh approximately 180-220lbs...Here is the article that backs it up:
The English Mastiff is the heaviest dog breed in the world. "Mighty Murphy" from England weighed 159 kilos! "Normal" weight of a fully grown male Mastiff is between 80-100 kilos (about 180-220 lbs.), but this varies quite a lot within the breed.
Compared to other breeds that often are considered big, the Mastiff is incomparable. Even if taller but less heavy breeds like the Great Dane and the Irish Wolfhound can be impressive, the English Mastiff has a combination of power, size and massiveness that no other dog can beat. The smallest breeds tend to look a bit funny standing beside of a Mastiff. It's like that famous quote: "What the lion is to the cat, the Mastiff is to the dog". It's an interesting thought that you need at least 40 Yorkshire terriers to match the weight of one Mastiff!
Good luck!
EDIT:
Great Dane, Malamute, St. Bernard, Mastiff Over 75 pounds
5-8 cups dry food/day
2 cans + 2½ to 5 1/4 cups mix of dry and canned food

He looks fine (in fact, he looks like my apricot mastiff!)With this breed you do have to watch the weight. Being over weight will cause stress on his joints. A good gage for weight with a mastiff is you should be able to see the last rib. Make sure that you are feeding him a high quality food made for giant breeds. Feed your dog twice a day (split your food into 2 meals). I free feed my dog, but he will only eat when we eat. Each dog is different, do whats best for your dog. If you still think he needs to lose weight try taking him for a extra walk a day (don't restrict his food too much), the exercise will do him good.

What a beautiful dog! Really - just gorgeous.
I thought it was better to feed a large dog 2x a day because if they only get one meal a day they scarf it down too quickly and then they get the bloat....
Maybe feed him the same amount but spilt into 2 meals....?
You're so lucky! That dog is a dream!

Looks normal for his breed, Mastiff mix ? And he doesn't look overfed or obese at all. But the vet has examined him so follow his advice. Especially with the dog already large, being at all overweight would be bad for his joints, hips, etc and could shorten his life span.

Great looking fit Great Dane. I don't think he needs to lose weight. I see you are on your knees in the picture. Imagine this, I had a Irish Wolfhound/Great Dane that could stand on my shoulders and look me in the eye when I was standing and I am over 6' tall. She was around 150 lbs. Biggest pup I ever had.

He doesn't have a growth disorder.. You should be feeding him 2 times a day tho. Check your dog food bag, and see what he should be eating each day, and divide that into two meals.
