I found out my 17yr old sons taking it on advice from his football coach. I've read about dehydrating can be a problem, are there any side effects? Any advice will be helpful.

First off, creatine is totally safe, naturally occuring, and scientifically proven to improve endurance and performance.

Creatine is a natural constituent of meat, mainly found in red meat. Creatine is a nutrient naturally found in all our bodies. It is a combination of 3 amino acids; arginine, glycine and methionine. Creatine helps provide the energy our muscles need to move, particularly quick and explosive movements. Muscle contraction is initially fuelled by ATP (adenosine-triphosphate).

Creatine does not make YOU stronger or faster, YOU make YOU faster or stronger. Creatine allows you to train at a higher intensity level and to recover faster.

If you are a heavy consumer of red meat, don't expect dramatic results from creatine supplementation (1 pound of beef equals approximately 2 grams of creatine, and 4.6 grams in every pound of herring. Over 2 grams per pound in most fish).

I recommend a good powdered micronized creatine. I use AST micronized creatine and have had made good gains. bodybuilding.com is HIGHLY reputable, affordable, and fast on delivery. I've never had a problem.

There hasn't been too much research done on creatine supplements taken by teens. According to some studies, taken in recommended doses, creatine can be safe and perform it's proper function, but it can be abused too. Creatine has also been reported to have caused seizures and kidney failure. It also has many other serious side effects. You should probably encourage your kids to stop taking creatine or at least make sure they take proper doses. Hope this helps!

Creatine is really bad for your liver. And it only puffs up your muscles. As soon as you stop using it, your muscles will just deflate. If your son wants to gain weight then he should eat lots of tuna. And do lots of intensive workouts.
