Have you raised your cat to take car rides with you?
Just adopted an adorable kitten.
Would LOVE to train this cat from kittenhood to adulthood to ride in cars, take cat walks {on one of those cat leashes they sell}, and from the start {after all their shots/distemper,ect} give them occassional baths--not a lot of baths just maybe once a month
BACK TO CAR QUESTION THOUGH :o)
thanks

I have a cat that LOVES to ride in the car.

We have a special harness that she wears when we go on car trips. We take her pet carrier and keep it on the backseat.

We have certain rules and she respects those rules. One of my boys sits in the back with her and when we are in heavy city traffic, or getting ready to stop and open the car doors, she goes in the carrier.

Then, when we are out on the highway, she gets to walk around the car and visit everyone. She usually likes to lie in the back window and watch the other cars go by and sun herself.
She also likes to lie on the middle partition whenever we run the AC, she likes it to blow in her face!

I have two cats. Had them both since they were babies.

They each get a bath at least once a month. We've been doing this since they were very tiny. We use diluted baby shampoo and they love it. They even come into the shower when my husband and I are in there so they can play around in the water.

Their skin is perfectly healthy and their fur is soft and silky. their vet routinely compliments us on how healthy they are and has never once told us to stop bathing them. Not that I could anyway, I have terrible cat allergies and the dander build up if I didn't wash them regularly.

As for walks, just take it a little at a time. Your best bet would be to start introducing the cat to the leash while you are still in the house, to get him/her used to the restrictions of the leash and harness, then move outside. Slowly.

Car rides, my cats love them. You have to start young though so they can get used to the feelings and noises involved. There are harnesses made for this. Here is a site so you can get an idea:

So, yes, you can do all these things. Let me know if I can help you further.

We have raised Scottish Fold cats for more than 10 years. My husband would take a kitten along when he went to the bank or to the post office. Kitty was an instant hit. He liked to have the kitten ride on his shoulder while he was driving.

However, having kitty loose in the car can present a hazard to the kitty and to you. Kitty shouldn't be on the floor where she will get in the way when you step on the brake, and you wouldn't want to be distracted as kitty bites your shoulder. See what I mean? It is much safer to put the cat in a cat carrier and then buckle that in with the seat belt. I imagine there are car seats available for pets (dog or cat of same size doesn't matter) but I wouldn't think the pet would like it unless they could see out the window. But then again, if you were going very far, it would be naptime, no matter what the view.

My cat particularly liked the air conditioning when I turned the vent on him so his whiskers would wiggle in the breeze (while he was in his carrier.)

My daughter had a kitten and where she went the cat went in the car. Kitten usually sat on her shoulder without a fuss. Cats can get used to car rides.

Sister drove two hours to my house with her 7 yr. old cat. She brought along the cat carrier with the door open. Her spoiled boy decided he liked the back window instead. Never did go in the carrier. He was just fine.

Sister puts "spoiled cat" on a lease with harness (I think the harness would be more comfortable) and off they go for their walk. Sister isn't quite sure who's walking who, but they enjoy there walk together. Or she may tie him right out side the door.

Be sure lease/harness is right size or they can slip out of them. They're slippery little things.

As for baths ... you wouldn't want too many baths. Will take oils out of fur. Pet stores sell packages of soft moist disposable wipes. Cats in general aren't crazy mad to have a bath. Some cats I'm sure don't have a problem. You might want to ask your vet how often is good or bad.

You can learn to clip your kittens nails and brush those pearly whites.

You have very good habits that you want to teach your cat.

Wish you much love and happiness with your new "baby."

Cats generally hate riding in cars. They really don't like change. I'm not really sure that this is something that you should even attempt. It's a great thought, but I just don't know if it's feasable. It may end up terrifying the poor thing.

Cat walks are absolutely possible, if you start early enough and you have a cat with the right personality. Both of my cats hated it, so, I was content to have them spend their lives indoors next to me.

As far as baths, I would strongly urge you not to do this. Cats clean themselves and bathing them regularly can lead to skin problems, serious stress, and even fur problems. The only time your cat should be bathed is if his personal hygeine has slipped and he really needs it. If you take proper care of your cat (meaning grooming, good food, and keeping him indoors 100% of the time), he should be just fine for a good long time.

Congrats on your new addition!

cats need a bath every once in a while start when they are young and be fast. my cat is nine months old and she has had maybe 4 baths now and every time it gets a little better because we have established trust.

she has not gotten use to the car and gets down near the breaks and on the head rest and cries, so I purchased a carrier and when I want her to travel with me I place her inside and our rides have gotten more relaxed.

now for the walks anything I believe is possible, my girls take my cat for walks in their doll stroller wrapped in a blanket and she can get away if she wants but I think she enjoys herself.

I had a calico cat that I'd take everywhere as a kid she'd ride in the backseat right beside me, she was more so used to the car rides I think because we moved several times in the 8 years I had her.

I love cats and would suggest that you get a little dog if you want to go for car rides, walks, and baths. Most cats will have none of that.

you are funny! Cats are not like dogs, you can teach a dog to follow you and to like you; but cats choose their owners, if they dont like you he'll ignore you., believe me.
