I know the whole mother Jewish thing but I completley disagree. It's NOT a scientific fact, therefore it is not plausible to make a statement like that! My dad was Russian Orthodox and my mum was Jewish, (before commies!). I refuse to ignore my dad's genes. So can I say I'm half Jewish? (I'm not even religious!) Half Jewish but Atheist? Can I claim that title?

Excuse me. I was mixtaken, You are not part of a race, but you are part of a religous movement. No matter what, you are considered by Jews to be Jewish. You can consider yourself whatever you want.. But that is what you are. be haf Jew if you like.

Jewish in the sense you use it is an ethnicity. You say you do not believe in the Jewish faith. Most Jews will consider you Jewish anyway (but that's your ethnicity). If you don't attach much importance to it from a spiritual point of view, then that claim will have little importance for you. Of course, religious people in your family may give you a hard time about your beliefs, but they remain yours.

You can have Jewish ancestry and Jewish cultural ties and be an atheist. A large portion of the Jewish community is secular and don't practice any religion or espouse any religious belief.
Do you really need a label?

Technically, according to Jewish tradition, it goes by the mother. So if your mother is Jewish, you are Jewish. Doesnt matter what your father is.
EDIT: BTW, of course its not scientific. Nothing about religion is scientific. Its merely tradition.

I don't see what your problem is. My dad is of Italian origin and my mom of Spanish origin. I just say it like that. You can say your dad is Russian Orthodox and your mom Jewish, but you are an Atheist. That's it.

Your mixing religion up with race.
According to the Jewish ppl, you are Jewish because of your mother.
According to the rest of the world, I don't know, because you haven't mentioned your other nationalities.

its hard. you don't wanna throw away your heritage but if your not religious.. i think the title is all or nothing. your either a Jew or your not your either cathlic or your not, your either black your not, but you can still be a Jewish with out being religious. its just who you are. but its all bulls hit i mean religion in general is all nonsense so if you dont believe it then w/e/
bottom line it depends when someone asks you what religion you are , you can say atheist or in my case agnostic but if someone says are you Jewish you can say "it depends who you ask"
that's what i say anyway, .. glad to help

Just because your mother was jewish doesn't mean you have to have anything to do with her religion.
If there were more jewish atheists perhaps there would be more peace in the world.

Religion does not run in genes. You are Jewish if you claim you are Jewish, and if you don't claim it, then you are not.
