I usually take any dogs I'm considering out for coffee, then perhaps to the bar later and get to know them before judging their personality.

Well looks are definately first impressions. If you wonder into a pet store you'd go "OMG THAT DOG IS SO CUTE I WANT IT" but if you're actually looking for a dog, you'll research the breed that suits you most when it comes to its personality as such, and the sort of environment that you can provide for it. So i guess both apply but if someone buys a dog on it being "cute" rather than knowing anything about its breed or even assessing its personality when they first see it then that's more of an impulse buy.

I took into account Both. I researched the dog based on how they looked of course, that is the first impression. But then I made sure to invest months into research, talked with breeders, talked with Vets and spent time at the local dog park. I picked the perfect dog companion, He is high energy, intelligent, can pick up new tricks, is loyal, protective but social and loves children, and loves to be my companion. Plus I live a healthier lifestyle because of my choice in breed cause he loves to take a hike or run every day.

i think both as a lot of people have said , i choose my new dog because that breed just came to my head , and yes they are beautiful so i went and researched the breed and i feel in love with it , i have liked the way other dogs looked and after research they are not right for me , just because a dog looks cute dont mean it is right for the person. i think all dogs are beautiful .

For me, it's both. I can't say I have one favorite breed or look when it comes to dogs, but I have breed preferences and personality preferences.
I have three very different dogs with very different appearances and very different personalities. I like variety but there are some breeds I don't picture myself as ever owning because I never cared much for their personalities or looks.
Anyway, some of my faves are mixes. I love the interesting blends of coats, colors and personality. As far as purebreds go, some of my favorites, by personality and appearance are:
German Shepherd Dogs, American Pit Bull Terriers, Australian Shepherds, Shelties and Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

I do think a lot of people mistakenly choose their dogs based on looks alone, when they should be taking personality and breed characteristics into consideration more than they do.. I chose my dogs based on their look and their characteristics.

personality. I have met some very ugly or even "boring" looking dogs who were the greatest dogs ever. Looks shouldnt be a factor!

Unfortunately a lot of people get dogs based solely on their looks. As a German Shephard breeder, I see that more than someone who is looking for a certain kind of temperment.
Oh and just a side note-if someone tells me how cute a puppy is and doesn't ask how the parents are personality-wise...they don't get a dog.

for me I got my dog Dakota because she chose me! When I went to go get her it was her brother and her. Her brother didn't even come to me but she did and thats how I knew she was the one.She loves me to death and would do anything for me! My protector too.
My other dog is a lab mix. I got him because of his looks and because he was gonna be a big dog and I like big dogs. Also because he kept lookin at me while his sisters and brothers were sleepin. I knew he was for me too!
