Maybe many believe in false gods but they are not false to the believer.

Common belief is the only true God is the one I believe in. Everyone else's is, false. The truth is no human is capable of understanding the "true" nature of God, so as a matter of fact we all believe in a false God.
Of course there are the atheists who claim, there is no God. Since they have no evidence of that either, that also is likely to be a false belief.

A "false god" is any of the very, very many "gods" in the world that lure and tempt people away from the love and mercy of the one true God.
Examples of "false gods" include greed, power, lust, and the false religions.
Jesus, Son of God, is THE path to forgiveness of sin and salvation of the eternal soul (covenant of the New Testament).

Because the term "false god" is subjective. If you believe in a subset of God(s) {A}, then the rest of Gods {B...Z} are automatically 'false'.

First possible reason: He doesn't know the true God.
S.P.R. : He wants a God to exist because he needs it.
F.P.R. is addressed by believers in other Gods and the S.P.R by atheists.

Its much easier in ways to accept something less than God. That way, you can conceptualize for whatever you need it to be in your life; a good luck charm, a waiter, etc.
