you adopted him. He came from a home that obviously abused him. Everytime you raise your hand he thinks you are going to hit him or beat him like his old owners did. He thinks that you are trying to hurt him. He sounds like he has a sweet nature and you did the right thing by giving him a new start. he will come around when he knows your not gonna hurt him.

Don't take it personally that your cat doesn't want to get close to you right away. If your newly adopted cat came from a previous abusive owner, the cat will have problems trusting you. You have to give it time and let the cat warm up to you. Don't try and rush the cat to get it to like you, it will only take it longer for it to get used to you. As much as it may hurt your feelings, let the cat approach you on its own terms. When the cat is ready to be touched, you will know.
Don't introduce another animal into your home since your new cat is still getting used to your house. The last thing you need is the cat to become territorial and starts to pee all over the place.
Just give it time.

I have a cat like that. He only wants to be petted when he chooses to & thats fine with me. I actually prefer a more independent animal like that. I have another cat who exactly the opposite. It is just their personality and I dont believe that there is a whole lot you can do to change it. Is he an adult now? If not he might be able to change if he is still young enough. And do you know any of his background? was he abused, what kind of household did he come from.....that might have something to do with his personality.

Sounds like a cat I have. All of my cats I got from a friend, and one, well, she's not the type that wants to be petted. Like everyone says, give the cat time, and he should come around. One way is to reward him. When he gets close to be petted, give him a treat, and rub his back slowly, like giving him a massage. If he lets you do that, start massaging his back - most cats love it. It takes time, but you will get though to the cat. My oldest, which is mine, only comes to me if I'm home, and she is very picky about who pets her, but thankfully, she doesn't bite. She just growls.

I have Moomoo's for 3 years now, she would let me feed her and give her water and she would let me play with her. But as soon as i got to close to pet her she would run, so as far as holding her " Yeah right " think again that wasn't going to happen.
She to would sleep on the end of my bed from time to time, if i woke up and went to touch her she would jump right off the bed. But right out of the blue a few weeks ago, she's been all over me. Licking me and rubbing her face up in mine, and she now lays every night right up next to me !!!!!!!!

Cats are independent beings with a wide range of personalities. You know the cat adores you if he does all that.. just let him be. Cats cannot be controlled like dogs. They have their own agenda and hopefully you fit into it every now and then.
I rather like it. Dogs are too clingy.

is he fixed? this will mellow them out. was he abused before you got him? sometimes cats take a long time to adjust to new owners. we took in a stray that we believe was abused at one time. the vet said he was between 6&10. the wife could pick him up right off the bat, but it took almost 2 years before he would let me pick him up. we figured he was probably abused by a man at one point or another. patience is the best remedy sometimes.

Sounds like your cat has "Issues" about being Handled- & they have NOTHING to do with You! Obviously -he likes you very much since he stays close to you... -So I guess you're just going to have to let HIM call the "shots" in the "Affection Dept".- cuz He's not gonna have it ANY other way! It's JUST the way some cats are...

Remember that cats lick themselves clean.
It could be your lotion, perfume, deodorant, soap, detergent, even your diet that makes him want to avoid contact. (certain smells and chemicals in your diet will seep through the skin).
Could be he wants to avoid something on (or about) your skin.
Take him on his own terms, or find someone who will. That's all you can really do with cats.

Maybe the cat just does not want to be touched, he doesn't like it so just leave him alone. Let him love you but respect his wishes!
