That would depend on your standard of counting. Within the organization Jehovah's Witnesses count those that are active within the congregation and the preaching work. However, governments use a much wider standard by simply asking whether one considers themself a Jehovah's Witness regardless if they are an active member or not. This tends to skew the number higher.

My understanding is that there are slightly under 7million active Jehovah's Witnesses around the world at this time.

About over 6 million babtized Jehovah witnesses. We know because we hold conventions (get togethers) with other congregations and it is organized so that we can keep cont how many people are being babtized. Then the information is sent the the Watchtower organization in Bethel, New York. The Watchtower also send out a year book once a year to show how many got babtized in what country... really cool.

Any other questions just ask. But beware because there are people who would try to mislead you to get you to think badly about us. We're really good people just trying to follow Christ's example. That's why we go door to door. "Preach the good news to all the inhabited earth..."

Peak publishers (those who go from house to house) for 2005 were 6,613,829
We know this because of our Yearbooks and other publications... and those figures come from our monthly reports.
Every Witness fills in a piece of paper every month that tells how many hours they preached, their Bible studies and how many publications they placed etc. Then those are all tallied together.

**Edit in response to some confusion by others:

144,000 is the number of people resurrected to life in heaven. The rest look forward to living forever on a Paradise Earth. Next time a Witness comes to your door ask them if they're going to Heaven. There's a 99.9% chance they'll say they look forward to living on the earth- NOT heaven.

No one living today has EVER EVER seen Jehovah. So how could anyone even CLAIM to be a witness? They are all liars.
