I've been told about a regulation that states if you receive a certain amount of money, i.e. an inheritance or winning the lottery, you can be discharged from the military. However, no one I've talked to actually knows what the regulation is, or the amount of money you need. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

You can be discharged "Honorably" when you win or inherit a large sum of money. There is no regulation that specifically addresses this. It would be an administrative discharge with the reason cited as "in the best interest of the" the branch of service you are in. The thought is that a military member with a large sum of money would be a disruption to daily operations, intentional or unintentional. Managing a large sum of money is a full time job. It's understood that a military member with a large sum of money would most likely be extremely unmotivated to perform up to military standards, so "in the best interest of the Service, you would be discharged.

The government will give you an honorable discharge because of the catch-all discharge of "needs of the service". You really don't pay anything back to the government, they don't want you to slack off, piss off everybody around you, and then get kicked out while still earning a paycheck. It would have to be in the millions though.

I have never heard of anything that says that you can get a discharge just for receiving a large amount of money.

everything the military paid to get you in,, including your paycheck.

I heard lottery winners spent like over $1,000,000 to get out of the military.

there is no specific reg that states that if you alluvasudden find yourself with X number of dollars you can get out.

it is a CO decision based on the good of the service.. namely, they feel that the individual would not focus on their job because they are now wealthy. it is NOT guaranteed, and there is not minimum dollar figure.
