I bought my dog a big round fluffy filled pad to lay around on while on the floor. He walkes up to it and starts scratching like he is fluffing the damned thing. He goes on scratching and pawing at it for a couple minutes and when he gets the middle fluffed up again, he lays down. Is my big brown dog fluffing up his own mattress? Its so peculiar I cannot believe he is fluffing his own bed in preperation for bedtime. What do you think?
If he doesnt fluff it, there is a big dent in the middle from him laying on it.

Now he is laying there snoring. He acts almost human sometimes. He snores and grrrrs in his sleep.

I live for when my dog does this with his bed(s). It is so freaking cute I can't stand it. But anyway, this behavior is instinctual. When a wolf or coyote is in the wild, sometimes they'll pick a spot in tall grass to sleep in. They will scratch and circle one area over and over and over again until that area is flat. Then they'll lay down and go to sleep. Kind of like a canine crop circle.
Whenever I get my dog a fluffy new bed, he *has to* work on that thing for a while before he'll actually lay down on it.
Scratch, scratch, scratch, turn, turn, scratch, turn, turn, turn, aaaaaaaaaand down.
Whatever the reason is that they do it, I still think it is one of the most adorable things that dogs do.

hehe, my dog does the same thing. he's just fluffing it up so it will be fluffy and comfy. my dog will not stop doing this, it takes him about 3 minutes then he'll turn in circles about 5 or 6 times, then FINALLY lay down. :)

he is making it comfortable. it is like when us humans fluff our pillows. most dogs do it. if i were to go in my dog's kennel and fold up his blanket (he has a bed under it) and place it neatly over his bed he would go inside and dig in it and scratch at it and put it in the corner until it was comfortable for him and then he would lay down and lay his head on it. that is just how he gets comfortable

He sure is fluffing it! LOL My dog does it also. Sometimes he drags it to the 'right' spot. Other times he sticks his snout under it and flips it over....he is a strange one! lol

My dog does that all the time. She even scratches the carpet or sofa before she lies down. I think it's pretty cute as long as your dog doesn't break it and eat the stuffing or something.

my dog sleeps in the bed with us...he will "make the bed" every so often and pull the covers down to his liking...it's funny to watch...actually it's his bed, since he's there most of the time...he lets his people sleep there with him but he knows his place is at the foot of the bed when we are there...
