I have a Hitachi HD Tv from a few years back. It has component and DVI.

I know that Component does not work for HD DVD players, but does anyone know if their has been any upgrades to allow HDMI to DVI cables to work? I had heard that due to copyright the HDMI to DVI cables originally only allowed 480 playback. Has that changed?

Right now, media providers are not setting the HDCP flags on hi def DVDs. When they will enable them, no one knows. When they do set the flag, Hi Def players will only output in HIi Def on the HDMI port, so that HDCP can be used. If you have an older set that does not have HDCP capability, HDMI won't work, and you will only be able to view the DVD in low def. Since there are still many TVs without HDCP capability, the media providers are holding off on setting the flags. The same thing appllies to cable boxes and sat boxes. The TV providers are also holding off on setting the HDCP flag.
HDMI to DVI cables will carry the HDCP signal. There are older analog DVI versions that will not.

Is this a duplicate post? I just answered this in the Home Theater area.

Component works great for HD. I am using a HDMI->DVI cable for 2 HD sources right now and I am getting HD video.

The only funny part: When I hook up BOTH component and the HDMI->DVI cable, the Component down-converts to 480. Unplug the HDMI cable and the component snaps back to HD.

You can buy a HDMI->DVI adaptor for about $35. I bought a 10ft cable that does this for $38 from BlueJeans
