I have a Hitachi HD Tv from a few years back. It has component and DVI.

I know that Component does not work for HD DVD players, but does anyone know if their has been any upgrades to allow HDMI to DVI cables to work? I had heard that due to copyright the HDMI to DVI cables originally only allowed 480 playback. Has that changed?

Sirbobx is right. Component works but due to manufacturuers paranoia about copying signals are downrezzed.

HDMI and DVI are identical for video (HDMI also carries surround audio) so with a converter (or HDMI to DVI cable) you can connect to your TV. The audio can be connected via the optical connector.

I believe the 'copyright' you are referencing is HDCP (High definition copy protection). This is a protocol that allows a 'handshake' between two devices and if passed allows full res signals. IF your TV has HDCP you should be home free.

To be safe, get an agreement from the store that you can return the HD DVD if you can't get a full HD picture due to HDCP issues.

Component totally works for HD. I have my BluRay and HD cable box hooked that way right now.

You can buy a simple HDMI->DVI adaptor or buy a cable that has HDMI on one end and DVI on the other. And you will get real HD. My TV is using this now.

The funny thing: When I hooked both the HDMI and Component - the component down-rezed to 480, not the HDMI.
